I don’t think I’ve ever been ashamed of enjoying a band’s music until I saw this commercial on TV…
For those not in-the-know, Of Montreal sold their tune to “Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)” to Outback Steakhouse.
Yes. Outback Steakhouse.
I’ll let you decide whether or not this is the ultimate form of selling out as a musician (read: yes, ultimate), but I’d go out on a big limb and say “Yes, it does indeed sucketh…hard.” You can quote me on that.
I wholeheartedly agree. I was sure my ears were deceiving me when I first saw the commercial, but sure enough, they’ve gotten themselves turned into jingle-writers. It’s especially frustrating because it’s not that hard to sell out well (see The Concretes and Modest Mouse), but Of Montreal have sold out about as badly as a band can. Ugh. Totally awful.
amazingly awful yet funny
ah, leave them the fuck alone. let the band get paid. you try being a musician nowadays.
I think I would have been more upset had they left the original lyrics. Now it’s just really really funny. I think we can say they sold out when they start to do Verizon commercials “Hi…this is Of Montreal…”
I can’t believe they sold their music to make money! Why don’t they just get desk jobs instead like those of us who look down our noses at them for making a living with music!
P.S.- Beside, I have a feeling they did this with tongues firmly planted in cheek.
At first I was really upset when I saw the commercial.
But then I realized hey, who wouldn’t be pumped to be in an Outback Commercial?
I mean, Bloomin’ Onions, come on!
Please, it’s not “selling out.” It’s a commercial for a hamburger–it’s not supporting Halliburton or killing puppies or anything. I feel most people who cry “sell-out” are the brand of music critics that don’t play music themselves. Not that there’s anything wrong with that (I’m one myself, most are), but there’s something to be said for making a living as a musician. Besides, the idea of “indie integrity” is something idiotic anyway.
Selling cruelty and needless death, more like it. I’ve been listening to Of Montreal for a decade, but fuck ‘em. They make boppy dance music for johnny-come-latelies. They had power problems at a gig in Norman, Oklahoma and attempted an acoustic set that sounded like total shite. Indie is so dead.
It definitely is selling out, purely by definition. I love the band and all, and I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same in their position, and I’m not criticizing. But to say it isn’t “selling out” just isn’t true.
Selling out?
lets talk about this for a second.
What if a band sold rights to songs, much like these guys did, and used the money they make to provide free downloads of all of their music, would that make them still “sell outs”?
this is where the music industry needs to go, quit letting the record companies control your value, and selling power.
and give the music away, then your fans are not your enemies, or thieves and the commerical monies will belong to the band, and not the over paid recording companies.
not that of montreal is doing this, but the trend is starting to move that direction with bands like Radiohead, NiN, and Saul Williams rocking the freebies.
dont bash what could be a blessing in disguise.
What we’re all forgetting here is that of Montreal is one of the most sleep-inducing bands of the last decade. Did they sell out? Of course they did. Am I put out about it? No, because they’re terrible.
