Wolfgang's Vault Concert of the Week

filed under:

I'm sure any reader of this blog is now familiar with the return of Wolfgang's Vault -- specifically the streaming side of Wolfgang's Vault where a new concert from the archive will be released each week. Why how very kind of you, Mr. Wolfgang!

Here's this week's...

Shortly after the release of the monumental Electric Ladyland album, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played an experimental set of tunes to a lucky Winterland crowd. Tune in to hear Electric Flag organist Herbie Rich sit in on a few Hendrix classics.

Wolfgang's Vault is a cool site, but I haven't checked out the archived streaming concerts yet.

If anyone is a Rolling Stone subscriber, there was an article recently on Wolfgang's Vault (maybe the new one with Snoop on the cover). Some artists are fine with the streaming concerts, but some (including Bob Weir I believe) are threatening legal action because they feel Wolfgang's Vault is using the free streaming as a way to draw customers to their site to purchase posters, and t-shirts. If that is the case, the artists feel they should get royalties.

I am a poster collector and in a few forums I have heard people complaining that when they try to sell BGP posters they own on eBay, Wolfgang's Vault threatens them with copyright infringement.

It will be interesting to see if any bands ever threated WV for selling posters with their names on them. The posters, for the most part, I believe were created as advertising for concerts, not for sale. If WV sells the posters, shouldn't the artist receive a cut of the $$?

They definitely have a bad image via poster collectors for 1) flooding the market with reprints of classic posters, and 2) trying to harass people for selling posters they own on eBay, and 3) many think their prices are inflated (and is the real reason they don't want people buying at lower prices on eBay).

Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

FYI, Wolfgang's Vault in case some don't know, is a company that purchased the rights to Bill Graham Presents' vault of shirt, posters, music, etc. It is named Wolfgang's Vault because I believe Wolfgang was Bill Graham's middle name.
