White Denim

February is always an exciting time of year to plan ahead for music festival season and this week has been a busy one around these parts. Everyone else is getting busy, too; it looks like the Bonnaroo website was just relaunched with a new set of 2012 graphics and a promise of an artist announcement coming sometime next week.

And yesterday, the internets came ablaze with a pretty shockingly close rendition of the artist lineup (new artwork!) we would expect out of the Bonnaroo 2012 lineup, even if it’s an obvious fake complete with a typo or two and a few big calls that really could be false (but would be ill if it actually went down, like Paul Simon doing Graceland in its entirety). This dude on the Inforoo.org boards was the genius behind it all (via Hidden Track).

It still got me psyched to see what actually comes out next week, and the three headliners on the top of the bill were exactly as we’ve seen confirmed elsewhere (like Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers) or heavily rumored and plausibly likely (Phish).

So we know that much (kinda): Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers for sure. Phish probably. The Word definitely. Skrillex likely (heh). And sure, why not Randy Newman? Belee dat! READ MORE

This week in shows kicks off with a few repeats from last week’s list that are sticking around town: @ Music Hall and the Drums @ the Bowery. We’ve also got some bigger shows of note this week, including the big hip-hop double bill of & for two nights at MSG (Mon and Tues), and with and on Sunday night, also at the Garden.

For something a little smaller on Tuesday, I’d suggest hitting the Sea and at The . I was impressed with their opening slot for Broken Social Scene last September, and anything with John McEntire (Tortoise) on drums is bound to be pretty solid in my opinion… READ MORE

Post image for LMB SF: This Week’s Concert Calendar – Oct. 24-30

Happy Monday, folks. Everyone out here in the Bay Area is recovering emotionally after the transcendent experience that was this year’s concert down in Mountain View, CA. While I couldn’t make it myself this year, most of my crew made it out for a day and reported back nothing but smiles and heartfelt appreciation for live music and what brings to the table each and every year for this special event.

As always Neil Young made a set of special appearances each day, and footage is up from the feed so you can see the sit-in he did with as well as this shot of him and doing “Pocahontas.” Look at the band reaction when Young joins them on stage… READ MORE

Post image for TOUR DATES: White Denim hit the road this Friday

One of our favorites ’round here at LMB HQ is , and they’ve been unleashing a steady stream of new music and tour dates since I first caught them back at SXSW a few years ago. I’m glad to see they’re staying busy, as the band is heading out on the road this Friday and doing dates with and a few random slots with Thrice, Alabama Shakes and Jimmy Cliff (!!) in LA.

Love this new jam they just put out, too…

Post image for White Denim Announce Fall 2011 Tour Dates

announced some fall tour dates today! The band will be hitting the road with and have plenty to show for their continued relentless hard work. They’ve got a new EP coming out soon and they just got to chill with Jack White. Blowing. up.

Their video for “Street Joy” is amazing, by the way.

On Saturday night I caught at the and, as expected, I was blown away with their live show. Holy shit, do I love this band!

White Denim’s latest release – D – has quickly become one of my favorite albums of 2011, so it was great to hear the album live nearly in its entirety along with some deep-cuts from the bands full catalog. They opened with a similar non-stop song attack to this live segment I posted last week. But, believe it or not, they played it with even more energy.

Frontman James Petralli is a monster, not only taking on vocal duties with a grit and growl, but deftly handling rhythmic riffs and trading leads with their new second guitarist, Austin Jenkins. The rhythm section — with Joshua Block on drums and Steve Terebecki on bass — provides a kind of jet-engine propulsion for the band to bowl over the crowd. They’re almost like a modern day version Moon & Entwhistle, but dare I say, even tighter on the execution. I wouldn’t necessarily call White Denim a jamband, but they are definitely “jammy” in all the best ways, often unleashing a stream of guitar and bass riffs, but doing so in concise 4- to 5-minute passages. While there were some much-needed quieter moments showcasing the band’s ability to go mellow, most of their hour and a half set was a non-stop dual-guitar assault.

If a great show can be measured in how one physically feels after the encore, then this one gave most of the Bowery crowd some serious whiplash. I think I’m just now removing the neck-brace.

Summer in is now in full swing and we’ve got a busy week of local shows already upon us. I’m getting stoked for two shows this weekend, which should both be stellar. Friday night I’ll be heading out on the Hudson to join on “the Big F-ing Boat” (aka the Rocks Off Concert Cruise). Saturday is all about catching rock out at the Bowery Ballroom, which is why I posted the video above from one of their Austin shows in march. I’m really digging their new album D and can’t wait to see them bring their dual-guitar madness to the Bowery this weekend.

Also, we just got word that will be doing a free, “secret show” at LPR tonight at midnight…which is pretty rad if you can pull off the late-night midweek show. Read on for shows we recommend this week…

Note about Concert Listings:
For this week’s post, I used my “old standby” for concert listings, Jambase.

The Dodos @ SXSW, the Parish, Austin, TX, 3/16/11

I got back from SXSW this past weekend, but I’m still in a bit of shock and awe (and recovery) from my five days down there. I’ve been meaning to post this since Sunday, but I’ve also been battling some kind of post-SXSW plague while trying to catch up at work.

SXSW is this weird, all-encompassing music industry free-for-all that showcases the best and not-so-best of this industry I have somehow found myself engulfed in. While I came away totally exhausted and fairly overwhelmed, I also managed to run a very successful Day Party (for eMusic at the Beauty Bar), see some solid panels, eat some great BBQ and tacos, and, of course, catch a ton of killer shows. I also put my new lens to its first true test, so my review below is pretty photo-heavy with a few themes and thoughts to pull it all together. READ MORE

Last Wednesday, one of the best jambands you’ve never heard of rolled through San Francisco and played a raging, non-stop set to a half-empty room of people left with their jaws dropped and nothing more. That band was White Denim, and they just finished up a large tour in support of their release of Fits [...]
