This week’s NYC-area concert calendar is bumpin’! The Allmans Brothers are back at the Beacon, Elvis Costello’s at the Count Basie Theatre, They Might Be Giants play the Williamsburg Waterfront, we’ve got two shows by reunited 90s alt-rock titans (Bush and STP), and this oddball lineup of Weezer, The Flaming Lips and Yeasayer are all at Jones Beach.
But, as usual, it’s the smaller club shows — and, in this case, the boat cruises — that interest me most. For something a bit more rock-based and singer-songwriter-y, check out The Barr Brothers and/or American Babies at the intimate Rockwood Music Hall. Or, get a little edgier with Sonny & The Sunsets et al over at the Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg. But if you can only choose one, I highly recommend the Budos Band on the Rocks Off Concert Cruise for some groove-laden horn funk by the dudes laying down instrumentals for the majority of Daptone Records releases. Can’t be beat.

The lineup for the Voodoo Music Experience was just announced. Experience, festival, whatever — it’s a music festival. The annual music experience festival has tapped Muse, Ozzy Osbourne and Weezer to head up the lineup set for New Orleans on Halloween weekend. Read on for the full massive list of artists set to play. There’s definitely some good stuff in there and could well be a good music festival to hit if you’re unlike me and eagerly awaiting any news of a potential Phish Halloween festival this year. The lineup for
Bumbershoot 2010 in Seattle was just announced, too. They’ve tapped
Bob Dylan,
Mary J. Blige,
Weezer,
Hole and more for this year’s festival set for Labor Day weekend, which is marking the 40th year that the event has been taking place. Our buddy
Kane will likely be there covering the event for us, and he already pinged me and said he’s looking forward to the event.

Weezer has officially joined the ranks of “indie band” again with the decision to leave Geffen Records late last year, which came as news via Billboard today along with an idea of how the band is going to be approaching their immediate future…
Weezer is taking it easy on the road this summer, however, with 13 mostly festival dates, and Shriner said he didn’t expect many more to be added. “There are a few dates getting filled in along the way, but I think our big focus is to hit these festivals,” he said. “I think we’re just kind of looking at efficiency and the way to reach the most people. I don’t know if anybody’s super excited about getting in a bus again right now. This just seems to be the way it’s going.”
We’ll be looking to the Bonnaroo performance as the “real” Weezer that we’ll likely see in their future. The band just released a new album called Raditude

This year’s lineup for the Mile High Music Festival was just dropped in our inbox, and it’s looking like a pretty solid, mainstream festival for the Colorado fans. The celebration returns to the lawns at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver, CO for the weekend of August 14-15, 2010. You’ve got Jack Johnson topping the lineup on Saturday, August 14th and Dave Matthews Band topping the lineup on Sunday, August 15th, and the other bands rounding up the lineup are all headliner-worthy themselves with My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Phoenix and many more all set to play. Like New Year’s Eve, Halloween is another holiday that a lot of bands choose to celebrate in style. There’s just something about mixing the live concert experience with all the fun and choas of Halloween that really brings out the freaks. While most bands typically play into the Halloween vibe in some way, touring bands often approach Halloween as an opportunity to really create a unique live music event. Just as we did with our New Year’s Eve concert round-up, we’ve compiled a list of Halloween concerts that will be going on this weekend (see below for the long list).
We have also noticed a few bands that are taking a similar approach to Halloween as Phish by doing some sort of “musical costume” and either covering another band’s music or playing a full show of thematic covers. Here are a few of the more interesting “musical costumes” we’ve seen announced this year:

I was surprised to find out that in the fifteen years that Weezer has been putting out some of hardest and catchiest pop music around, last Wednesday night’s show was their first time headlining the storied arena. Go figure.
