Woah.
Since winding up his fall tour, the Phish guitarist has been making a daily commute from his New York City home to Bridgeport, Connecticut’s Tarquin Studios, recording with his band and members of the National and Mates of State for the last month. Peter Katis, who owns the suburban studio and has produced a string of indie rock albums there (Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights and Antics, The National’s Boxer, Mates of State’s Rearrange Us), is co-producing the album with Anastasio.
I, for one, welcome any and all inspiration to strike Trey these days and seeing the band’s forays into covering Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel and TV on the Radio all point to this as a very logical progression. Let’s see what he does with it.

Trey Anastasio has announced his first-ever orchestral tour, with four dates slated for February and March of 2012, in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Denver, and LA. The programs will be conducted by Scott Dunn in all four cities and feature orchestrations of classic Phish songs and solo Anastasio compositions. READ MORE

I remember the first time I heard the audience recordings from the Trey Anastasio performance with the New York Philaharmonic back in September, 2009, because it was one of the rare moments when you’re chilling by yourself on a Sunday morning in front of your laptop and you stumble into a piece of music or moment captured from the stage that gives you straight-up chills. When I skipped ahead promptly to hear about Trey put together “You Enjoy Myself” with the symphony, I was more than pleased and grinned largely as I strained to listen through the recording hiss, which was easily overwhelmed when you hear the audience react to the “jam.” Such a masterful rendition of a song so many of us have only heard or wished to see in such a dramatic juxtaposition from the setting in which the recording originated.
And this video posted today on YEMblog only further solidifies how hard this hit the audience that night:

Our writing conquered the chasm…the rift. The thing we did best and did forever, songwriting, reignited our friendship.
–Tom Marshall about “Backwards Down the Number Line” and the story about how Trey and him reunited and brought back that writing period in Trey that spawned the 2009 reunion. I personally found that rather touching.
If you’re like us here at LMB and you’re a Phish fan (although not as huge of a fan as brooklynvegan writer BBG), your Twitter feed has likely been active this weekend with the news that Tom Marshall has joined Twitter (@TomMarshall111) and gotten to tweeting immediately that he was planning on releasing demos and early versions of many of the Phish tunes that fans know and love. Noice!

This week in NYC shows, there’s some great jazz, including Pat Metheny (Tues @ The Blue Note), Wynton Marsalis (Fri & Sat @ Lincoln Center), and Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman (Sun @ Bailey Hall). Other than some classic jazz, there’s a nice mix of funk, folk, rock, and a ton of live electronic dance music to round out the week.
