Best. Announcement. Ever.
The Whigs
The boys in Kings of Leon just put out their updated tour dates with the openers for each date on the tour, and it’s shaping up to be an impressive arena-rock tour before the shows have even started. The band tapped The Whigs for dates in June, Built to Spill and The Features for dates in July, then the Stills join in late July with The Black Keys joining for the dates in September. Any one of those combination would be epic in an arena and well worth the trip out to the show. READ MORE
The Whigs just announced a set of dates opening up for The Hold Steady. The band also played Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night…
The Whigs are continuing to tour hard in 2010 as they gear up to release their third album, In the Dark. They’re currently on tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and they’ll will finish out a full Spring touring schedule with Band of Skulls and 22-20s, along with a few festival dates (including the Hangout fest and Mountain Jam).
In the Dark is set to be released via ATO records on March 16, but they’re already rolling out the full-on pre-order assault over at thewhigs.com, including some free downloads:
We wrote about the all-new Hangout Music Festival a few weeks back, but now they’ve added a bunch of artists to their 2010 lineup, including Ben Harper & Relentless 7, the Flaming Lips, Trey Anastasio and Classic TAB, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and the Funky Meters. The festival is slated for May 14-16 at The Hangout and nearby public beach in Gulf Shores, AL.
If you’ve read this site for a while, you’ll already know how much I dig the Whigs. They play pretty straight-forward, melodic garage rock, but something about their sound just grabs me.
After nabbing a killer slot playing to huge crowds while opening for Kings of Leon this summer, Parker Gispert and crew are headed back out on the road to play smaller rock clubs on a six-week jaunt throughout the U.S. Their tour starts at end of October in Boston and should feature some new material from their forthcoming studio album, entitled In The Dark, which will be released some time early in 2010 on ATO Records. As a teaser for the album, they’ve released a free download of the album’s title track over at TheWhigs.com.
After the first day at the South by Southwest music fest and seeing 15 bands or so the day before, I was pretty tired and ready to hunker down for Thursday’s music lineup. I knew it was going to be capped off by our crew arriving early to the NPR Music showcase featuring The Whigs, Yo La Tengo, and My Morning Jacket, so all I had to do until then was have a good time conserving my energy and try to catch as much new stuff as possible. Along the way that day, I think I easily accomplished my goals.
