I can’t tell you how excited I am for tonight’s Paul Simon show at the Fillmore here in San Francisco. He’s already played two nights here in the Bay Area and I expect this show to deliver some serious goods, and I’m already flush with emotion realizing that I’ll finally get to see this legend in somewhat close proximity while he’s playing his sweet, sweet music. Here’s to hoping he busts out “Boy in the Bubble,” which he did down in LA recently…
A few weeks back, I caught one of my favorite Medeski, Martin & Wood shows I’ve seen to date. These guys seem to be a point in their career where they can do no wrong, and the show I saw definitely did not disappoint. So I thought I’d ask a friendly taper if we could use his source of the show for our next podcast and he happily complied with the ask, so hopefully this little podcast mix will help you groove your way through your Sunday. I threw the tracks together using my new “DJ” setup and it’s the first of many more mixes to come from me. Think of it as a dubbed out version of the memories I came away with from the show. Enjoy! Last night was the third time I’ve gotten to see Medeski, Martin & Wood since I’ve relocated myself to the Bay Area, and my friends and I left the venue in awe of an unbelievably confident band that seems to get tighter and tighter every day they continue to play together. In the past, I remember I actually thinking that these guys were boring at times and couldn’t get their act together to find a groove, but those past few shows have been nothing but concise and directed. I wasn’t bored for a second last night.
At any rate, the band continues on tour up the West Coast this week, then they go to Japan in April ahead of a sure-to-be-busy summer with dates already booked at Red Rocks (supporting John Butler Trio) and Bonnaroo. I’m really hoping there’s still time to add them to the High Sierra lineup…
Seeing the photos from Girl Talk at Monolith reminded me of an idea I had to get some posts up that I long since forgot. See, sometimes when I go to a show, there’s not always an obvious sentiment that I get from it. I have no clear takeaway. I know myself that sometimes words can’t really do full justice for a show, so sometimes a photographic memory of the show will do. I’ve gone to so many shows over the years that I haven’t ever posted about, and I wanted to create a space for the flush of nostalgia that can occur when you’re looking through the photos on your hard drive or you discover a YouTube video from a show you saw years back that just now got uploaded. So we’ll call these posts a Flashback and welcome you to contribute to such an endeavor. Got some old photos from a great show that never saw the light of day? Send them our way with some words to accompany and we’ll try to help you keep the nostalgia alive. It could be cool for new fans of whatever band you’re writing about, or maybe it could be cool for someone that was at that same show and never saw those photos you took. Whatever the case, I think it’s relevant for how I consume music and it’s worth reflecting on your past experiences from time to time.
So here are some photos from a Girl Talk show I saw last year here in San Francisco to start the nostalgia fest, as I never got around to rounding up the photos from the show. My full set is here. Bask in the dance party craziness that is Girl Talk… READ MORE
A few weeks back I saw moe. play two fantastic shows at the Fillmore here in San Francisco, and I was honestly impressed. I’ve seen moe. throughout the years and left more than one of their shows early because they didn’t grab me, but these shows were the band at the top of their game. They were more concise than I remembered them being, which helped hugely. Check out the photos below or click through for the full size.
On Sunday night I witnessed my first Grizzly Bear show besides seeing them briefly last year at Lollapalooza, which funny enough seemed like it was two to three years ago at this point even if it was last August. I have already digressed.
Anyway, the opening band, Here We Go Magic, totally laid it down as an opener and really got the crowd up front into the concert early on. And because I was big into Grizzly Bear’s sound over the past few months and couldn’t wait to see how it was transformed to an entire show, they did not disappoint, not even for a second. The lights, the mix, the song selection, flow — it was all top notch. One of the benefits of seeing a band close a tour, I guess, which was the case with this lineup set for Sunday and Monday night at the Fillmore.
Here’s the video of “Southern Point,” the set opener; my photos from the show are after the jump.
I’m going to see Grizzly Bear tonight at the Fillmore, and I can’t imagine a band I’d rather see on a Sunday night (well, besides Phish @ Alpine Valley tonight). I’ve been into the Grizzly Bear haunt for a little while now, even though I caught on much later than the rest of the music blogs did. Their new album Veckatimest has been on steady rotation in my apartment and I’m pretty sure they’re going to absolutely nail the songs tonight given all the road time they’ve gotten recently. Plus, they just recorded a killer four-song session on The Interface. Check out “Cheerleader” below and check back for some photos from the show later tonight or tomorrow.
I’m loving the fact that I’m getting back into the swing of things here on LMB. We’ve got some cool stuff coming and the as-promised return to form of the old blog that we really loved writing, so thanks to all the folks that have been stopping by and commenting on the site. Good to have you all back!
I’ve still got some posts I want to write this weekend and some stuff I wanted to get posted, but there’s enough to do a full Heady Links roundup also. Check some of this stuff out today while you zone during your last hour or so at work:
“Maze” by Phish gets the 8+ treatment from EAR FARM. [EAR FARM]
Gov’t Mule just announced some summer tour dates. [JamBase]
“Bug” by Phish gets some philosophical treatment by Kid Dynamite. [Coventry Phish Blog]
Steve Martin finally hits the big time. [LiveDaily]
Finally, the Disco Biscuits begin a tour in California tonight with a show here in San Francisco at the Fillmore. I was working to try and get a hold of a photo pass but it hasn’t come to fruition yet. Either way I hope to have some highlights to share from the show tomorrow a.m. See you then, party people.
