The Decemberists

Post image for Photos: Sunday @ Outside Lands 2011

The third and final day of wrapped up yesterday and I was there to catch a bunch of the untz-y action. I made the festival grounds just in time for a full set, a high-energy set that seriously got people rocking and waving their shirts, a bit of the Decemberists then the remainder of STS9, and a headlining slot by that brought the kids to their feet hopping and wearing glowsticks and random furry costume accessories. In other words, it was a solid end to a successful festival for me and I’m hoping to finish off my main thoughts on the event while I’m mid-flight to Chicago for the Phish three-night run that begins tonight at UIC Pavilion. Let’s hope this wifi holds out! >>>

The lineup for the 10th annual Sasquatch Music Festival has just been announced. Once again the fest returns to the Gorge in Washington state for Memorial Day weekend, but this year the festival will be extended to four days, plenty of time to host the stacked half of the lineup with , , , and all commanding bold font at the top of the list. Here’s the entire list of artists scheduled to perform:

Foo Fighters, Death Cab For Cutie, Modest Mouse, Wilco, The Flaming Lips (performing The Soft Bulletin & more), , Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Bassnectar, Robyn, Flogging Molly, Death From Above 1979, Pink Martini, Cold War Kids, Old 97’s, Ratatat, Wolf Parade, Chromeo, Guided By Voices, Yeasayer, Beach House, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Local Natives, Matt & Kim, Deerhunter, Mstrkrft, Trailer Park Boys, Sleigh Bells, , Flying Lotus, Skrillex, Tokyo Police Club, Fitz & The Tantrums, !!!, Archers of Loaf, Against Me!, The Thermals, Best Coast, CSS, Surfer Blood, Jenny & Johnny, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, The Head & The Heart, Bonobo (DJ Set), City and Colour, Reggie Watts, K-Os, Gayngs, Tim Minchin, The Drums, The Radio Dept, Young the Giant, The Antlers, Sharon Van Etten, Villagers, Stornoway, Aloe Blacc, Black Mountain, Moondoggies, Noah & The Whale, Sam Roberts Band, Secret Sisters, Twin Shadow, Das Racist, Wye Oak, Tig Notaro, Wheedle’s Groove, Smith Westerns, Rival Schools, Foster the People, Alberta Cross, S. Not bad at all.

I’m sure there will be more artist announcements in the coming weeks as everything gets finalized; I’d also expect a host of comedy acts to get announced soon as well. For myself I’m not sure the headliners are bands I’m wild enough about to travel up the West Coast for this party, but anything at the Gorge is something I consider and I’ve heard people consistently rave about as one of the better festivals during the year.

Budos Band KEXP Studio Sessions

2010, Day One….

First stop for the day was the KEXP in-studio session with The Budos Band, playing a number of tracks from their new Budos Band III album. The band is self-described as Afro-soul, and pretty much every song the band plays makes you feel like you’re Indiana Jones running from the enormous rolling boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Seriously. If that’s not enough to get you to take a listen then nothing else I say could do the trick. Thanks to KEXP’s website, you can hear the entire session at http://kexp.org/streamarchive/streamarchive.asp. Enter “Saturday, September 4th” for the date, and “2:29 PM” for the time, and you can stream the entire 30-minute performance in a number of formats.

Next we headed over to catch Wheedle’s Groove, a collection of funk and soul musicians from the 60′s and 70′s who got together in 2004. They were welcomed onto the stage by Mayor Mike McGinn, who proclaimed September 4th, 2010 as “Wheedle’s Groove Day” in the city of . They had about 20+ different musicians on the stage over the course of their set and played songs from a huge range of artists, and even threw in a soulful cover of “Hey Jude” for a crowd singalong.
