There is a theory on how Telluride got it’s name…
It’s mining history and endless tunnels serve the phrase well, To Hell You Ride. Yet Hell is the farthest thing from it, especially when the town is hosting Phish for 9,000 fans and countless others perched on balconies, roofs and mountain tops. Keep this between you and me — you didn’t need a ticket to these shows unless you needed to see the band and wooden stage up close (which many of us did, of course). You just needed ears, some walking shoes, and the effort to get there. READ MORE
Uhm…
Phish in Telluride-Night One [The Lefsetz Letter]
I got my merit badge.
For every gig of the summer tour, all eighteen of them, Phish sells a merit badge. Yup, just like the Boy Scouts…if you get ‘em all, you can buy a sash, sew ‘em on and show off.
That’s what we used to do in the Boy Scouts.
Yes, I’m an Eagle Scout.
Who knew it was a paramilitary organization? But hell, it was where I had my first homosexual experience. I was too dumb and naive to realize that when Harold wanted to get into the sack and warm his hands between my legs…
Best blog post about Phish…ever?
And from the time we turned off at Placerville, you could feel the Phish vibe. The liquor store in Sawpit had a banner imploring Phishheads to stock up. And then, at the edge of town, we saw the tents. The first gig isn’t for another day, but people are already here. Hell, it’s the buzz in Colorado, our waiter in Vail told us he heard they were going to shut down the highway.
We made a right up to Mountain Village before we got into town. After unpacking, we’re gonna take the gondola down and explore. The shows are in town. But automobile access is limited.
I love going to new places. And although there’s infrastructure here, and even Oprah bought a place, you truly feel like you’re on the edge of the earth… Hell, isn’t that what it’s like being a fan of a band? It’s about you and the music. You and like-minded listeners. No one’s coming to Telluride on a casual basis, no one’s passing through and buying a ticket to see Phish on a whim. This is the hard core.
Can’t wait for the adventure.
Our good buddy @Phortin is up in the mountains and hopes to drop some tweets as the shows start tonight. I’ll be hoping for a stream and following along on Twitter with the setlist, also. It was great to completely drop that at the Greek the second I realized that AT&T’s service was basically nonexistent for me, but I’ll be picking it up again tonight from the sidelines. Make sure you follow @LiveMusicBlog unless you do already.
What Can We Expect After the Tour Break? [Online Phish Tour]
I expect there to be at least one stand out set at the Greek–when Phish arrived at Red Rocks last year, almost every set was a special one (I know I’m in the minority, but I really don’t get excited over the 7/30 show). After they are heated up, they will roll into Telluride–I think both shows in this extremely special place are going to be unbelievably balls to the wall amazing. With Phish having played almost every Gamehendge song over the past tour/year/era, the epic musical story seems to be on the tip of Trey’s tongue. After blowing up crowds with bust out over bust out, the only real bust out left–even bigger than Fuck Your Face–is a complete Gamehendge. You know Trey is thinking about it, and Telluride would be the perfect location for a daytime Gamehendge set.
Patrick called a “Ride Captain Ride” at the Greek forever ago, so we just wanted to get that down on paper now. Also, the third night of Greek is shaping up to be the world’s largest toga party if any of us have anything to say about it. I doubt you’ll see me in one of these, but if we can get some more people involved then we’ll have a fantastic sight on our hands.
And if Telluride gets a Gamehendge set, we can imagine seeing this happen.
And so we begin our countdown to the Greek shows and Phish’s return to the West Coast…
It looks like it’s game on for Telluride Phish this summer. The City Council of Telluride has given the thumbs up for those August 9 & 10 Phish shows we mentioned recently. But the approval came with an interesting twist: a sweetheart deal for 1,500 tickets to be set aside for local residents. That ought to get a few phans riled up. Let’s just hope none of those tickets pop up on Stubhub.
Those potential August 9 & 10 Phish shows in Telluride we mentioned a few weeks back just got one step closer to reality, according to an article in the Telluride Daily Planet. Last step? Official approval from the city council.
