As usual, there are plenty of good options this week, including , , , Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe covering the Rolling Stones, and two nights each of and . The lineup for the fifth year of the Las Tortugas Dance of the Dead Festival was just announced today with , , and topping the bill. The festival will take place once again down at Yosemite’s West Gate on weekend. Poor Man’s Whiskey will be doing Old and In The Way which has definitely gotten some attention in the past, but I’d be most interested to see how Guitarmageddon would be tackling the music of Prince. I imagine they got at least part of their inspiration from this video of Prince slaying the George Harrison induction at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony years ago. Should make for an interesting festival if you’re a California head, that’s for sure… READ MORE

It has only been a few months since I made the move to Brooklyn from Charlottesville, so I thought I’d give a little Cville music shout-out. Although it’s a pretty small city, Charlottesville has always had a fairly bustling live music scene. But over the last few years, it had been marred by a ton of turnover with the town’s mid-size music venues. The Satellite Ballroom closed, Gravity Lounge shuttered its doors, and Is hardly lasted a year. The Paramount was a nice size, but it was much less focused on the mid-tier, touring rock bands that helped make the scene vibrant. And the entire time I lived in the town, there was an ongoing restoration of the historic Jefferson Theater that simply never came to fruition.

Well, it looks like things are finally starting to pick up again. Gravity Lounge reopened under new management as The Southern and it looks like the long and storied Jefferson Theater renovation will finally be completed. They recently announced their grand opening including a pretty solid lineup of bands for late 2009 and early 2010. Good stuff.

Post image for 2009 Halloween Concert Round-Up

Like New Year’s Eve, is another holiday that a lot of bands choose to celebrate in style. There’s just something about mixing the live concert experience with all the fun and choas of that really brings out the freaks. While most bands typically play into the vibe in some way, touring bands often approach as an opportunity to really create a unique live music event. Just as we did with our New Year’s Eve concert round-up, we’ve compiled a list of Halloween concerts that will be going on this weekend (see below for the long list).

We have also noticed a few bands that are taking a similar approach to Halloween as by doing some sort of “musical costume” and either covering another band’s music or playing a full show of thematic covers. Here are a few of the more interesting “musical costumes” we’ve seen announced this year:

Halloween in California? Don’t like Phish? Go To Las Tortugas

Festivals
Thumbnail image for Halloween in California? Don’t like Phish? Go To Las Tortugas

No offense to the promoters behind this year’s Las Tortugas Music Festival, but they clearly did not do their homework and decide to hold off this year given that they’ll be in direct competition with the Phish Halloween celebration dubbed Festival 8. It’s a good lineup and all, even if it’s about a 90% overlap [...]
