Shout Out Out Out Out

As a Chicago native, I’m always proud to give a shout-out to Chi-town bands. I lived in Chicago for about four years and was able to catch Future Rock rock out the local club circuit a number of times with their unique brand of live electronic rock. In my opinion, this trio doesn’t get nearly enough respect in the electronic rock or “jamtronica” scene (ugh, I really dislike using the latter label, but it is useful). So it’s great to see these guys grabbing a nice headlining slot at the Metro and a spot at this year’s Rothbury Festival, because they’ve been serious tour workhorses for the last five+ years, and they keep putting together great tunes and a killer live show. Although is just as likely to get the house jumpin’ as a band like or the , their sets are a bit more geared towards the songs and crafting cool textures and themes. They also have picked some great covers to hone their sound (check out their takes on Daft Punk and Aphex Twin for some great examples).

For their Spring ’09 tour, they’ve linked up with Canadian electronic rockers Shout Out Out Out Out for the majority of their dates, and I am digging the match-up. The Shout Out guys seems to have taken on the Indie-rock dance party vibe of Holy Fuck and added a ton of vocoder and 80s synths to create their own little computer disco grooves.

Bottom line: These two should make for a nice, dance-friendly show, but with enough exploration and substance to keep you interested.

Shout Out Out Out Out @ SXSW 2008The first day of the SXSW 2008 music festival brought tons of fantastic music my way, and Shout Out Out Out Out was one of those bands that we stumbled upon on our way to another day party. They were playing to about 10 people at the Beauty Bar, a tiny dump of a bar that used to a beauty parlor. The band was kicking out some serious dance music, which is described quite nicely in their latest press release: “Shout out out out out = two drummers + four bass players + two samplers + five synthesizers + two vocoders. This is volatile dance music.” That sounds about right to me. I told the guys that I needed to stay and check it out and I think I was the only one that was fairly blown away. In fact, I was totally blown away. These guys put up some seriously fun tunes and I hope they announce some more dates on the just-announced U.S. tour dates.

Sixth Street @ SXSW 2008

By the time the music portion of the South by Southwest conference began, I was really excited for what I knew the week ahead of me would include. I had already started to plot out the ultimate schedule in my mind and on sched.org, and through the wonders of my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I had a handy mechanism for keeping up on what was going on all across town and what I could possibly see while in attendance. The ultimate schedule was impossible, but I had a good run through the entire fest and started out strong with about 15 bands on day one.
