Last year, Jazz Fest released its lineup in mid-January, about a month later than the year prior and the local competitor taking place two weeks and 200 miles away down the coast came out with their sterling 2011 lineup a couple weeks later on February 1st. Judging by the facts that (a) last year’s lineup came out this week and (2) that the festival is a mere 3.5 months away, the lineup should be arriving any day now…right?
The Voodoo Experience is now in the rearview and the relentless fall concert schedule is starting to slow down (although one could easily keep themselves busy on the live circuit until NYE) and therefore it’s time to start speculating about the 2012 Jazz Fest lineup. Hard to say who will be at the top of the bill when the lineup is announced but since we’ve probably got a over a month until the lineup release (or two months if released on last year’s timetable), here’s a handful of artists (however unlikely some may be) who could conceivably be at the Fairgrounds come Spring time. Over the last week or so, we’ve been hearing a slew of new rumors about potential new festivals in 2011. Some involve Phish, some Dave Matthews Band, some include both bands, while others sound like they’ll be multi-band events in the traditional festival style (e.g. Bonnaroo, Coachella, etc…). This may be old news for some, but the rumors are continuing to heat up that Phish will be playing Fenway Park this summer to open up their tour. BostonTweet reported earlier that he heard on good authority that Phish is indeed playing the venue sometime in the near future.
Awesome.
Update: the AceTicket.com blog seems to think this is confirmed and locked and loaded. We’re still calling it a rumor for now but all signs are pointing to the fact that this would be something damn hard to keep under wraps.
Today was an interesting day here on the internet if you are a Phish fan. There was more than a few people that chimed in on message boards and emailed the blogs to get the message out that the official word would be coming from the band any second now that would be confirming that they are reuniting early next year for a three-night run in Hampton, VA at the Hampton Coliseum, a venue that served the band well during their heyday. It’s not at all unbelievable and it’s not entirely confirmed yet. But it’s confirmed. It’s going to happen. And this is going to be huge.
I had mixed feelings for so long but any possible thought of getting the news tonight is something that excites me a great deal. The band will be coming off a long break and a large change in lifestyle for each member of the band (in theory), so it’d be interesting to see how they’d come together and how the shows would sound. I immediately started running through the thoughts of what I’d need to do to get there. Plus, I realized that I wanted to get ready for South By Southwest next year but I missed the cheapest badge price cutoff. So I have not yet booked my trip, so this is important in my consideration of what to do for an early 2009 vacation. It’d be fantastic to take my first trip out to Virginia to see the return of Phish, arguably the biggest live music event that everyone is going to be talking about for the next couple months. I have to consider it now that the news is imminent.
I’m hearing that the hotels in Virginia are already getting booked up for the weekend. I’m going to try to procure a place once the news is official. Anyone want to share a room?
I realized it super late last night after I had walked home from The Independent, but I completely spaced on getting a Phish Friday post finished off before I had to leave work. I wanted to make sure I had time to write a little bit about their Roxy ’93 release and it turns out that I didn’t. At least I had an excuse — I caught an absolutely killer Fleet Foxes show with some seriously transcendent moments. Then I got home and read this email…
Dude, I have checked this blog way too many times today for my always anticipated Phish Friday. Where is it? Don’t leave us hangin bro. No, I understand you must have had some real life to live but damn man, I need my fix. Good thing I can get it at phishthoughts.com
I just discovered that site and it is great. If you haven’t already indulged, you’ll be glad you did. See you at the Gorge 2009!
Thanks for the comments, loyal reader. I appreciate your jones for our Phish Friday and I’m sorry that we haven’t delivered on them 100% of the time. I can sense from the tone that it’s clear that there is an overwhelming feeling that Phish is going to be back next year. I can’t say I disagree, which is really wild to think around right now. There are some pretty serious rumors getting thrown around about tour dates and I’m all for linking to them to help continue to perpetuate them, but I thought I’d try to feel for the sentiment out there from the other readers of the site (like this guy quoted above).
Are you guys into all the Phish reunion tour rumors or do you guys think it’s stupid to even try and guess? Are we getting ahead of ourselves? Will they suck when they come back? Is it wrong that I think they’re going to rule?
