Our buddy Nick Isasi (@noodlecast) wrote up this awesome summary of all the amazing music he caught at this year’s Moogfest in Asheville, NC. There was a ton to take in and he was able to catch sets by Flying Lotus, the Flaming Lips, Battles, Amon Tobin, Holy Fuck and more…
Moogfest is a festival and celebration based around the memorial of Mr. Robert Moog. You know, that dude who invented the Moog Synthesizer which is used in so many music areas today. It was my first time attending this kind of festival that follows the SXSW format of “adopting” a community for a certain amount of time. I was excited to see how it would work. A relatively small town to hold a music festival, festival goers were forced to travel from venue to bar to parking lot to truly enjoy all of Moogfest.
You been paying attention Moogfest this year? We’re digging on their lineup and the daily schedule has been announced already. In addition to the top-tier lineup covered in untz and whomp, this year will feature the festival along with an expansion to a number of new venues in the Asheville proper. In addition to shows at the Asheville Civic Center Arena, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, and the Orange Peel, they’ve also added the newly renovated Asheville Music Hall (formerly Stella Blue) and the Diana Wortham Theatre, and plan to announce another outdoor venue soon.
The last time I saw Passion Pit was a year and a half ago at a small venue at Swarthmore College. That first time was just after Michael Angelakos’ mixtape for his now ex-girlfriend leaked all over the internet. Their first show was brief yet extremely memorable; even in their early form, you could tell that they were destined to play bigger venues.
Now, coming off the release of the deluxe edition of their first full length record, Manners, the young band is playing venues that seem to surprise even themselves. Angelakos even stopped between songs to admire his accomplishments, commenting “this is f-ing crazy…last time we were in philly we played the basement of a church.” His comment truly expressed the speed of the bands growth in fan base. Their set included all the hits such as Sleepyhead, The Reeling, Moth’s Wings, I’ve got your number, their cover of the Cranberries “Dreams” and truly amazing rendition of their song “Little Secrets.” READ MORE

This weekend was a great one for live music with Coachella and Wanee music festivals both playing to the masses to kick off the festival season. I watched a ton of the Coachella webcast and really enjoyed the experience of being able to switch between sets, so let’s hope to see more of that with some free, festival webcasts going forward. As I was merely watching from the sidelines, following Twitter and fielding texts from my friends at the fest, I still got an idea of what I would have been interested to see or thought was a highlight. Upon further reflection, this lineup was amazing and I really wish I could have gone. Doh.
We hope to bring you some of our own friend-of-the-blog amateur coverage in the next day or so when our friends get back to reality, so stay tuned for that and read on for some links from Friday at Coachella 2010…
The guys over at Baeble Music have gradually been stepping up their game in the music video realm, including concert video. The media site seems to be carving out a decent niche by generally focusing on the indie/art rock style of bands. This live video from Passion Pit’s Central Park show in September is a solid example:
After finally getting to see Red Rocks for the first time with the four-night Phish run, I’m instantly drawn to the Monolith Festival given the location and the lineup this year. There’s some really solid stuff on the bill, but there’s enough overlap in the coming months that I think I’ll get to see most [...]
