NPR Live in Concert will be running a live webcast from the Of Montreal show tomorrow night at 9:30 Club in D.C. Soul-freak kitten and my future wife, Janelle Monae, is set to open the show.
Everything about Of Montreal is a spectacle, and the band’s live performances are no exception. Led by frenetic frontman Kevin Barnes, Of Montreal stages fantastically theatrical concerts with elaborate sets, multiple costume changes and synchronized dancing, all driven by breathlessly unpredictable songs. Of Montreal is on tour for its latest album, False Priest, and stops by Washington, D.C. for a full concert, webcast live on NPR Music Tuesday, Sept. 14. The performance, from the 9:30 Club, will begin streaming online at approximately 9 p.m. ET, with an opening set by R&B singer Janelle Monae.
Awesome.

After finally getting to see Red Rocks for the first time with the four-night Phish run, I’m instantly drawn to the Monolith Festival given the location and the lineup this year. There’s some really solid stuff on the bill, but there’s enough overlap in the coming months that I think I’ll get to see most of these artists in another setting, albeit nothing like the iconic Red Rocks Ampitheatre. I had an incredible time at the venue itself, so throw in some of the best indie bands of the moment and you’ve got yourself a solid two-day festival. READ MORE

Of Montreal is back with a new album called Skeletal Lamping Collection and a decent set of fall tour dates to support the effort. I love how they’re releasing the album, too:
Of Montreal has unveiled the physical versions of its groundbreaking Skeletal Lamping Collection due out October 21 on Polyvinyl. The collection marks a first in album packaging and design, with seven different packaging formats to choose from when purchasing the forthcoming of Montreal album: A table top floral beast, a lantern, a collection of wall decals, a stallion shaped print, a collection of pins, and a clothing and tote bag line act as the Skeletal Lamping packaging instead. Now that is style. I’m eager to read the new writeup on Of Montreal and Kevin Barnes in the new Spin that just arrived at my doorstep. He is quite an interesting character, so it’s actually cool to read about him. And the band’s music is just wild thanks to his vision, so I’m hoping to catch their San Francisco date before I head off to Arizona for my little Thanksgiving break. Read on for the tour dates.

Remember that last podcast I did where I said, “if you like this podcast, stop by Live Music Blog to download the rest…?”
I just realized that I never actually followed it up with the entire show download, something that I’m trying to make more of a habit out of. Here is the better-late-than-never MP3 download that you might have been looking for after Live Music Blog Podcast #50 — Of Montreal live from the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA, 8/19/06.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of “So Begins Our Alabee” and you really can’t front on that “B.P. Takes the Mic” groove…
