Post image for PREVIEW: Great Big Shows Upcoming @ Tip’s
It’s a busy couple weeks at Tipitina’s Uptown, providing ample options for those looking to accent their Voodoo weekend and Halloween festivities with some live music. The big run of shows kicks into gear tonight with the Papa Grows Funk record release party. Tomorrow night, Rebirth Brass Band will be in the house and as usual Bruce Daigrepont’s long-standing Cajun Fais Do Do dance party is going down at 5:30 on Sunday for those looking to cut a rug.

I’m way behind on blogging duties on my end, so thankfully I can rely on the rest of the internet to help me catch up. John Margaretten shot the for JamBase this weekend and got some amazing shots; make sure you check out the rest of his work here. I was at the Saturday night show about second row behind Eddie Roberts, guitarist and “front man” for the band as they perform, and he is quite fun to watch. He opens his mouth wide and shouts to the air whenever the band needs to make a change, and the rest of the band members don’t skip a beat dropping into the next groove. I’ll easily go pay to see these guys whenever they roll through town again.

Funny enough, at the end of the Saturday night gig, they mentioned that they’d love to play High Sierra again but only if we request to have them back. I’m hearing that it’s a bit more about interest and it’s quite a negotiation to get them across that big pond to hang out here on the West Coast for Fourth of July weekend, but based on the buzz coming up around this band after last year’s festival I feel that they’re a lock for High Sierra 2011. At least they should.

Good news for fans planning on hitting the inaugural North Coast Music Festival in September — , , , Grace Potter, , and were all just added to the bill.

Leidseplein at night

It was a little over three years ago that I first attended Jam in the ‘Dam, the greatest tiny music festival you could ever wish for as an American jamband fan (or as a Dutch jamband fan, for that matter). For three nights I got to see my four favorite bands at the time — The Duo, STS9, and Umphrey’s McGee — at the legendary Melkweg club in Amsterdam, and it still comes to memory easily when I think of how great my first trip to Europe was. I met a guy named Harm, my first real “anonymous” international fan incident. Here’s what I said about it at the time:

I got to meet Hans, the man behind Here comes the flood. I’ve been enjoying his blog since the very beginning of the Live Music Blog and it was really cool to shake his hand. He had a friend with him named Harm who asked me how my feet were doing, and that was quite a surreal moment for me. Wait, people actually do read this blog? I met him on my way out of the Disco Biscuits set onto the Duo, and we never crossed paths again during the evening. No big deal, though, I’ll FOR SURE be back to Amsterdam one of these days and Hans and I can go for a bike ride then.

After a year off from the festivities, they just announced their lineup and dates for the 5th Anniversary taking place March 21-23, 2010. The lineup big-dog is Umphrey’s McGee, once again, and they’ll be joined by Yonder Mountain String Band, Les Claypool, New Mastersounds and The Bridge. Read on for the full announcement from the promoters.
