Happy 2012 live music freaks! Hope you all had a killer 2011 and finished it off with a bang and some good shows!

Last week was obviously a busy week for live music fans in the New York metro area, so naturally, the concert calendar slows down a bit this week as we start the new year. But that’s not to say there aren’t some great shows to hit.

Before digging into the week’s list of shows and recs, please let me know if you have any suggestions for improving this weekly series of concert calendar posts. I’m always looking for ways to make these posts more informative and useful for New York-area concert fans, so please drop me a comment or send me an email.

Ok, back to business…read on for the full run-down of this week’s interesting shows. READ MORE

Post image for Year In Review: LMB NOLA Staff and Friends Live Music Highlights
This little corner of the Internet would not be possible without the hard work and support of the people below. We’ve got an eclectic confederation of folks keeping the wheels turning at LMB NOLA and we hope you enjoy reading our memories from the year in music.
Post image for Foo Fighters, MMJ, Tom Petty and Herbie Hancock To Headline Jazz Fest 2012
Alas, the wait is over and the 2012 Jazz Fest lineup is here. Thrilled to see the return of My Morning Jacket (played Jazz Fest and Voodoo in 2010) and Al Green (Jazz Fest ’08), as well as the incomparable Herbie Hancock, Foo Fighters, Givers, a special performance by Levon Helm Band with special guest Mavis Staples, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Janelle Monae and Steve Earle among so many others. Time to start planning and waiting for the late nights and dailies to roll in over the coming months. Who are you excited to see? And also, who’s the “TBA” on there? See below for ticketing information and a few words from festival producer Quint Davis regarding this year’s lineup.

A few weeks back, Boing Boing released this killer long-form compilation of My Morning Jacket live videos and interviews covering the current status of the band. I figured it might be new to some other folks too, and at 20+ minutes it’s a solid weekend watch. Check it out: READ MORE

Post image for VIDEOS / REVIEW: My Morning Jacket @ Vanderbilt Quake, Nashville 10/20/11

So, played the Commodore Quake last night at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University…

  1. Look at their list of remaining tour dates…
  2. Figure out if they are coming within 50 200 500 or so miles of where you live…
  3. Buy tickets, go to show…

You simply cannot miss this band right now. This was my third time to see them on this tour, and I can say each show has definitely built on the prior ones, further cementing their status as one of the greatest live acts out there today. You can see them getting more and more confident with the new material, and old as well, choosing to make things delightfully weirder every time. READ MORE

Post image for VIDEOS @LMBNOLA: Voodoo Highlight Reel (RHCP, NIN, RATM, BTE, KISS, MGMT & more)
As we await the release of this year’s Voodoo Experience daily grids, here’s a look back at several video highlights from the last eight years of the fest (including a clip from 2005′s Memphis Voodoo Experience). Hopefully it’ll be a nice walk down memory lane to help you get ready for this year’s fest, which is now a mere 3 1/2 weeks away.

Regardless of your thoughts on this year’s lineup, to the festival’s credit, the Voodoo Experience always does a bang-up job of compiling one of the most unique, wholly eccentric and random yearly lineups of any American festival. No one outside of the Rehage camp could’ve envisioned this sorta lineup and I’m actually kind of excited about it after having been to Bonnaroo and ACL this year (two great festivals, but two with a great deal of crossover acts). Doubt I’ll get another chance to see Soundgarden, Blink-182, Fatboy Slim, Peelander Z and Snoop in the same weekend.

Austin City Limits served as the ultimate break from the status quo, an ephemeral voyage to a utopia far removed from normative daily life, embedded in the heart of one America’s most interesting cities. Also, the extended weekend was a long overdue first trip to Austin, TX for me personally, and I immediately became enamored [...]

Good news for My Morning Jacket fans just dropped in my inbox. While the band is coming off a triumphant headlining set on Saturday night at ACL Fest, they’re looking ahead to a December full of awesomeness with the announcement that they’ll be playing dates with Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Delta Spirit and Band of Horses, with the latter band getting the honor of gracing the stage with MMJ at their return to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, December 14th.
