I’m just moving onto the beginning of set two from Phish’s epic return to the stage last night at Fenway Park, and I have to say that this really is a new Phish that we haven’t seen in years. With a few debuts, a few stunning setlist choices, and some beginnings of the new jamming style that the band is still working through just as the audience is, I’m totally convinced that this band is highly respecting the fact that their fans want to see a Phish they can get excited about again.

From the sound of the source I have, it’s pretty clear the boys are excited again themselves.

With that, I thought I’d start a post to roundup all the Phish downloads I can find from the entire Summer Tour while calling immediate attention to the need for everyone to download their own copy of the Fenway Park show, one for the record books if you ask me.

Tortoise has put out a new mp3 from their upcoming album, Beacons of Ancestership, and Stereogum has the exclusive first-listen from the album. I’m definitely not hearing anything familiar in this track — and yet it sounds so much like Tortoise it really couldn’t be anybody else. I’m hoping to discover some of the tracks on the album that I may have heard live back when I saw them in Chicago a few times over the past couple years. They were definitely debuting and road-testing some of this material, which always makes me excited to hear an album to see how the live stuff converts to a studio package.

Sample the track below and let me know what you think. This band continues to make music that will challenge their audience even further, which is exactly what we, the heady audience, demands.

Greetings LMB readers! Whit here…good to be back!

It’s going to take me a little more time to fully work my way back into the LMB fold, but I thought I’d better go ahead and drop my initial post so that I can get back into the swing of things. As I get warmed up, I’ll have to fill you in on a few of my thoughts and ideas on what I’ll hope to bring back to the table. But for now, I thought I’d offer a more timely post to let you all in on a side-project I have been working on lately during Live Music Blog’s downtime and get you setup with a legendary jam that happened ten years ago today.

For anybody familiar with my most recent contributions to the site’s podcast archive, you’ll already know that a while back I started up a funny little thing I called the Hippie Workout Mix. Though the name was silly, the basic principal was all business: splicing together high-energy concert recordings for a killer workout mix.

For a taste of what this is all about, you can check out any of the three archived podcasts I created (vol. 1, vol. 2, and vol. 3).

At some point after LMB shut down, I got impulsive and decided to buy some domains. One of those turned out to be livemusicworkouts.com, playing off of the workout mix theme. Though it’s totally a niche concept, I really liked the idea of building out a larger archive of my favorite live workout mixes, individual tracks, and song segments.

The site is still very much in its infancy, but I hope to keep adding more tracks in the weeks and months to come. Overall, I hope LMW will become a kind of sister site to the larger Live Music Blog enterprise. With that in mind I also hope to encourage all of you to contribute and to make suggestions for tracks and shows to post. While you can always email me, I also have a dropbox at Sound Cloud where you can upload your suggestions. If you’re going to contribute, all I ask is that the tracks are decent quality concert recordings that make you move your butt. If you want to do some creative editing or add some commentary, we’re all ears.

Today’s LMW Feature: The Original High Energy Tracks: 10 Year Anniv. of Disco Biscuits 4-9-99

Although I have already covered this Disco Biscuits show on LMB, I couldn’t resist doing a 10-year anniversary post on the new Live Music Workouts site to celebrate one of my favorite high energy song segments. It’s just too good to not re-post:

Happy Monday, duders. I thought I’d start the week off with a small foray into a band I want to make sure we cover pretty heavily here on the site. That band is Animal Collective, a band you’ve probably already heard a lot of buzz surrounding already this year. No surprise there, especially considering that their Merriweather Post Pavilion release was extremely well received by the critics and fans alike. It was definitely something I listened to at least once daily for the last four months or so, so I guess you could say I enjoyed it quite a bit myself.

There’s something about this band that just immediately clicked with me once I saw this live video for “Brother Sport,” maybe right from the first vocals you hear out of Panda Bear as the video loads up. This music is just so insanely inventive to me, even if it probably is a ripoff of something else that’s already been done. Naysayers, be damned. This music sounds newer than anything that’s being put out these days, and the progression that this band has shown throughout their discography and live shows can not be overlooked. I’m only glad I just now discovered it before it’s too late.

One song you may not have heard much of if you only followed from the sidelines is the third track off the album, “Also Frightened.” To some it would seem that this would sound and feel like too much of an unconventional song and they might immediately just toss it off, but for some reason I found it to be the best on the album to me. Their arrangement on the album is definitely my favorite, and I think I liked it so much because I had heard some earlier live versions of the song — back when it was still called “Dreamer” — so I have a familiar taste in my mouth the first time I heard the album. But it was still completely new to me. That’s usually pretty impressive to pull off these days in the world of media over-saturation that we’re all navigating through blissfully.

So if you haven’t picked up the album, sample these earlier versions of “Also Frightened,” download the album, put on your headphones, huff a dozen whippits or so, and come back and comment and let us know how you feel. Let the buzz wear off first, though.

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3123/2873327210_68d70204bf_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Fleet Foxes @ The Independent, SF 9/19/08" style="float:left; margin: 0 10px 10px 0; />I just caught this in my inbox and I had a quick second to get it posted to share. I’m still largely obsessed with the Fleet Foxes after seeing their show recently at The Independent, and I will continue to be obsessed with them for the foreseeable future; their music is just so meditative to me. It’s extremely relaxing and something I’ve spent a lot of time listening to over the past couple months as my real-life has been more than a bit busy.

Prepare to not know where you are. Prepare to be completely yanked out of the casing, borders and firmament of your bones and prints. You will find yourself naked in the middle of a barren woods, or with a light covering of bedclothes flapping in the frosty, kick of a wind, looking sideways and likeways in all directions, rubbing the sleepy fog from your eyes and wondering what had just happened – how you got between a peaceful night in and a twisted version of your own personal bit of fantastic, perplexed carnivalesque solemnity. You’ll not be frightened.

Uhm, sure. We’re not in a position to disagree with that intro.

This Transmission will be available for free to download. “MySpaceTransmissions” is a music program that empowers top recording artists with a new platform to create and distribute exclusive video content available for viral distribution and audio tracks available for purchase in the U.S. MySpace Transmissions underscores the company’s commitment to building unique music programming and business models that benefit labels, bands, and fans.

Rogue Wave (myspace.com/roguewave) was formed in 2002 and has released three albums the latest being Asleep At Heaven’s Gate on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. The making of the album was marked by life changing events like drummer Pat Spurgeon’s kidney transplant, keyboardist Gram LeBron lost his father, singer Zach Rogue had a daughter and the band recruited a new bass player (Patrick Abernethy, formerly of Beulah). The band’s song “Lake Michigan” was featured in a very popular Microsoft Zune ad. Asleep At Heaven’s Gate was produced by Roger Moutenot known for his work with Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney and Elvis Costello.

The songs for the Rogue Wave Transmissions are:

Chicago x 12
What Difference Does It Make (Smith’s cover)
Eyes
Lake Michigan
Lullaby
Like I Needed

All content from MySpace Transmissions will be archived and available on-demand on the MySpace Transmissions profile and via MySpaceTV (http://www.myspacetv.com). Users will be able to add the content to their profiles and virally share the artists’ videos throughout the network, and purchase the audio tracks via MySpace. MySpace Transmissions represents a progressive music model that truly encourages artists and labels to generate revenue while still maintaining an organic and intimate connection with their fans.

Medeski, Martin & Wood are going out on tour soon to support a new experiment:

The Radiolarian Series – named after a type of single-celled organism with dazzlingly intricate exoskeletons – is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write/record/tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, will convene for brief writing retreats, perform only that new material on tour, record the material immediately after getting off the road, and release it as an album on their own Indirecto label.

The process will be repeated three times, resulting in three albums – the first of which,
Radiolarians I, will be in stores on September 30th.

We’ve got the first mp3 from the project here and I imagine the band will be having some fun on their fall tour. They were having a blast when they played at Slow Food Rocks. I still have a ton of photos to put up from that festival, too. Read on for the dates.
