Comments on Concert Listings:
For this week’s post I used Bandsintown.com‘s concert listings. Overall, I like BIT’s ease of tracking, slick interface, and their Facebook app. I also dig their concert cloud interface and found it useful for preparing this post. However, there were a few shows missing that I saw on other listings, like Railroad Earth. This may have been due to the artists that are automatically being tracked (or not tracked) in my account, but it could have been avoided if there was a a simplified search option allowing me to look for upcoming shows in all of NYC (note: typing “New York City” into the main search box did not work; it should).

Last night I caught a killer American Babies show at here in . The show was one of four official record release parties for their new album Flawed Logic, which I mentioned in a previous post (and included a full stream of the album and their new video for “Dance All Night’).

The night started with Tommy’s latest incarnation of the Babies doing a nice mix of tunes from their last two records as well as last year’s Weight of the World EP. They kicked things off with the twangy “Dance All Night” and tore through a bombastic “Joeline,” providing an early highlight of the night. Lyrically, their new material — with its desperate characters, lost lovers, and drunken sinners — taps into the Johnny Cash-style of classic American country and blues, pushing Tommy’s songwriting approach further along the spectrum of Americana. Another highlight of the night was “Streets of Brooklyn,” one of Tommy’s strongest new tunes, featuring the locally appropriate lyrical references — “wolves of Wall Street” and “under-loved kids with vintage guitars” (Williamsburg hipsters?) — along with a beautiful progression from “streets of Brooklyn” to the “streets in Heaven.” The new tunes mixed nicely with the themes of older standouts like “Invite Your Friends,” “Brooklyn Bridge” and “Babe, Don’t Cry.” READ MORE

If there is a worse night of the week to see a gig than Wednesday I don’t know what it is. Wednesday is hump day; three days of work have already tired you out, but you still have two more staring you down, so it’s not always best to go all night. That said, the right show can change all that. A great concert with the band and the crowd feeding off each other’s energy can make you forget about all your midweek woes.

I was really hoping Wednesday night’s Apollo Sunshine show at Mercury lounge was going to be one of those gigs. I hadn’t actually checked out much of ’s music prior to the show, but I had heard enough people sing their praise that I was really looking forward to checking out a new band. When I heard that in the spirit of the season they would actually be appearing as The Experience, donning costumes straight out of Hair and playing Hendrix covers I was totally sold.

Unfortunately it was the spirit of Wednesday that owned the night. I’m not entirely sure if it was a lack of energy from the crowd that through the band off, or if their was something slightly off with Apollo Sunshine that led to a weak crowd. Whatever it was, something wasn’t quite clicking at . READ MORE
