A few weeks back, I caught one of my favorite Medeski, Martin & Wood shows I’ve seen to date. These guys seem to be a point in their career where they can do no wrong, and the show I saw definitely did not disappoint. So I thought I’d ask a friendly taper if we could use his source of the show for our next podcast and he happily complied with the ask, so hopefully this little podcast mix will help you groove your way through your Sunday. I threw the tracks together using my new “DJ” setup and it’s the first of many more mixes to come from me. Think of it as a dubbed out version of the memories I came away with from the show. Enjoy!

Last night was the third time I’ve gotten to see Medeski, Martin & Wood since I’ve relocated myself to the Bay Area, and my friends and I left the venue in awe of an unbelievably confident band that seems to get tighter and tighter every day they continue to play together. In the past, I remember I actually thinking that these guys were boring at times and couldn’t get their act together to find a groove, but those past few shows have been nothing but concise and directed. I wasn’t bored for a second last night.

At any rate, the band continues on tour up the West Coast this week, then they go to Japan in April ahead of a sure-to-be-busy summer with dates already booked at Red Rocks (supporting John Butler Trio) and Bonnaroo. I’m really hoping there’s still time to add them to the High Sierra lineup…

Medeski, Martin & Wood are going out on tour soon to support a new experiment:

The Radiolarian Series – named after a type of single-celled organism with dazzlingly intricate exoskeletons – is designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write/record/tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, will convene for brief writing retreats, perform only that new material on tour, record the material immediately after getting off the road, and release it as an album on their own Indirecto label.

The process will be repeated three times, resulting in three albums – the first of which,
Radiolarians I, will be in stores on September 30th.

We’ve got the first mp3 from the project here and I imagine the band will be having some fun on their fall tour. They were having a blast when they played at Slow Food Rocks. I still have a ton of photos to put up from that festival, too. Read on for the dates.

This DVD is amazing. I’ll probably do a nice little write up on it today. The extra footage is somewhat lacking in the idea that Phish could put more mounds of extra footage than any other band to come before them.

Grateful Dead – Beyond Description 1973-1989
Do we really need twelve more Grateful Dead discs? If the answer is yes, then proceed to pick this up and let us know how this sounds.
