Lotus played to a sold-out Independent on Saturday night and arguably played the best two sets I’ve ever seen them deliver. The energy in the room was solid. Check out my photos from the show:

Sorry for the absence of this here column last week; I got hit with an acute case of tonsillitis which definitely killed my Monday pretty badly. Felt like I was swallowing razorblades….but the good news is that it got me to the doctor to get some killer horse-pills to clear my junk up, so I ended up catching a few good live shows last week when all was said and done. More on that to come, but for now let’s dive into the cool music coming through San Francisco this week that you all should be paying attention to. READ MORE
Our friend Nick Irving went to the Lotus show on Saturday night at Terminal 5 and shot the hell out of it. The band returns to the road on Oct. 20th in New Haven, CT and play a month worth of shows across the country as deep fall and winter start to set in, including a two-night stand here in San Francisco. Sweet.

As fall comes into full swing this week, we’re getting a really nice mix of interesting shows in NYC with some especially noteworthy bands in the indie rock and folk realms. Starting with the more eccentric artists, there’s tUnE-YaRds @ Le Poisson Rouge (tonight), Cymbals Eat Guitars @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Wed), the triumphant return of the Rapture @ Webster Hall (Thurs), and Superhuman Happiness doing two nights at Zebulon in Williamsburg (Fri-Sat). For something eclectic but a bit more folk-oriented, there’s lots to choose from, including Beirut @ T5 (Thurs), Wilco @ Central Park (Thurs-Fri), Fleet Foxes @ the Williamsburg Waterfront (Sat), and Megafaun @ Mercury Lounge (Sat-Sun). If the Indie Folk thing’s not your bag, there’s also plenty of dance-oriented jams with Lotus playing T5 and the return of Particle at Brooklyn Bowl (both Saturday). >>>
Outside Lands Music Festival began yesterday and I caught a seriously wicked day of music and definitely enjoyed myself out there; front to back I was able to catch Lotus, The Meters, MGMT, and Phish all with great sight lines, plenty of friendly connections and some free beer courtesy of the media tent. Day one spoiled me completely.
Here’s a bunch of my quick shots and cell phone photos from yesterday; I’m heading back out there now and plan to recap the whole weekend once I’m on a flight to Chicago for the three-night Phish run at UIC Pavilion… >>>
