Taking in a show at the Masonic Lodge located within the famed Hollywood Forever Cemetery is always a treat. It’s a small room seating roughly 200, with tall ceilings, two hanging chandeliers and seated cushioned benches to the side. To keep it a little more hip, the walls feature film posters like A Clockwork Orange, while Harold & Maude greet you upon entering. It’s one of the more unique rooms for an acoustic performance in Los Angeles, especially considering you just walked past a few gravestones to get there. Last night we were all very fortunate that M. Ward (real name, Matthew Stephen Ward) decided to play a solo gig there. Having Norah Jones sit in doesn’t hurt either.

After hearing of Jim James’ unfortunate fall in Iowa City, its a little tough to write about the great time I had catching My Morning Jacket at the Greek Theater a few weeks back. Jim James has such energy and is totally in command when on stage, it is awful to think that he hurt himself doing what he so seemingly loves to do. Those of us who live in Chicago should know that MMJ is fully committed to its fans, the band will come through Chicago to redeem the postponed shows and burn the house down.
While I was in LA I got the chance to spend “An Evening with My Morning Jacket,” as they so aptly named their concerts on this tour. My Morning Jacket understands the concert experience well, something that they probably learned through ten years of exploits. The show had few down periods of energy unless the band seemed to want it that way; they were constantly in control. They played for a good two and a half hours complete with a five song encore. It was fantastic, I was lucky to see them in such a wonderful venue and for those of you feeling a bit bummed because of no MMJ this weekend, believe me, they’re worth the wait.

It’s difficult writing a review for a project which doesn’t have actual songs, song titles, and works with little structure. How do you describe it to someone? There’s no tree with which to hang the branches. But that’s EOTO, and that’s why on Wednesday evening about 100 people packed into the Fais Do Do at 10pm and didn’t stop moving for three hours. I was anticipating dance but not this much. It was one big party and if you weren’t dancing because of Hann and Travis, nothing was going to make you. READ MORE
Aaron Fortin just went and saw The Secret Machines in LA and gave us this review to post…
Stepped into the venue kinda early. Local band IO ECHO opened. Caught the end of their set. The singer is a rocked out lady, and she was sure as hell rockin’ it. I stepped in the sidedoor to the band covering “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” and rocked to the nines it was. Then her popular song “Addicted” which has been getting some airplay on Indie 103.1 lately. The only radio station you really need in the LA area.
Then we were treated to the reason we were all there. First off, the Viper Room is cozy. Its capped at 250 people, and I’d say even that’s pushing it. But it sounds great. The sound bounces off the walls the way it should and The Secret Machines delivered those sounds in force. The bar could go a little stiffer on the drinks but heck…
