Post image for REVIEW (via @coventrymusic): Karl Denson’s Sticky Fingers @ The Indy, SF 10/21/11
Karl Denson's Tiny Universe arrived in San Francisco for a two night run at the Independent (one of three venues, the Boom Boom Room and the Fillmore are the other two) less than a 15-minute walk from my apartment in Lower Pacific Heights, so my girlfriend and I were eager to see a show so close by without having to worry about buzzed driving and finding a parking space. One of the primary reasons we moved to San Francisco was to soak up the juicy music scene -- especially shows within walking distance from our couch. Last weekend we caught Denver's own Juno What at the Boom Boom Room, and this weekend we were pumped to catch a special performance from Karl Denson.

Although Hurricane Irene ended up being rather wimpy — considering all of the preparations and dire warnings — it certainly screwed up a lot of concerts and festivals this past weekend. Brooklyn Bowl had to postpone BP’s Saturday show, so I was denied what would have certainly been a raging, late-night throwdown (including a fist-pumping “Inside the Tinman” according to the band). Here’s hoping that the weather clears up nicely this week and lets the show(s) go on.

Speaking of which, there are two standout shows this week at outdoor venues… and are teaming up for a show at the Williamsburg Waterfront, which should be pretty stellar. For something a bit more keyboard-centric, the Beekman Beer Garden has & the Noisemakers with opening, a show I’m definitely eyeing as a nice outdoor option to break up the week.

For something a little funkier, Karl Denson’s locking down Brooklyn Bowl for a two-night party on Thursday and Friday. That sounds groovy, but I’m also eyeing some of the unique collaborations that are happening over the weekend. First, we’ve got — on break from drum duties for the Dead — pulling together a bit of a NYC super-group with , , & Andy Hess at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn. The show is now billed as Rumble Dogs, and even though I have no clue what music they’ll be playing, it’s bound to be pretty amazing with that core group of players on the bill. Another interesting night of collaborative groups goes down at Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday. , Will Bernard, and Robert Walter are playing the Bowl’s early show, while Steve Molitz, , & Freekbass are handling late-night freakout duties with what’s being billed as “Headtronics.” Assuming that’s short for some form of “heady, electronic” music, then I’m guessing it’ll be an interesting dance party with a bit of a jammy bent. If you want to dance to something a little more in the indie-electro vein, then I definitely recommend checking out at the Palms in LIC on Saturday (and, according to Songkick, also on Monday night). Of course, for the bigger fans of straight-laced electronic dance music, Randall’s Island (venue for the Electric Zoo Festival) is probably the place to the be this weekend.

As always, there’s quite a lot more happening this week in NYC than I’ve got time to dig into above. So, have at it…

Interesting shows from this week’s NYC concert calendar:

The High Sierra Music Festival has announced its initial 2010 lineup, including the likes of the , , , Bela Fleck, and among many others. The Northern Cali fest is now in its 20th year and will once again take place over the 4th of July Holiday weekend. The folks decided to roll out this year’s lineup in an interesting way, releasing this video below, a spoof of Apple’s famous product presentations for the iPod and all their other gadgets:

High Sierra 2010 – Initial Artist Lineup [YouTube]

It’s a bit hokey, but I guess they felt like they had to do something bigger to compete among the hype and din of the busy festival lineup announcement season. Personally, I think they should just to stick to what they do best: consistently putting on a great mid-size music festival in the hills of Northern Cali. No matter what you think of the video, their 2010 lineup is definitely an interesting mix with a lot variety and is just about right for High Sierra’s traditional niche.
