Jam in the ‘Dam

Phish.net was on the tweets this morning with the news of a few tour dates sneaking out onto the internet before any other announcement has been made. Now the bass master’s website has been updated with the info and a pre-sale has already started for a few of the dates…don’t slack on this announcement if you’re on the East Coast. Don’t forget that Trey is on the road pretty soon, too.

Leidseplein at night

It was a little over three years ago that I first attended Jam in the ‘Dam, the greatest tiny music festival you could ever wish for as an American jamband fan (or as a Dutch jamband fan, for that matter). For three nights I got to see my four favorite bands at the time — The Duo, , and Umphrey’s McGee — at the legendary Melkweg club in Amsterdam, and it still comes to memory easily when I think of how great my first trip to Europe was. I met a guy named Harm, my first real “anonymous” international fan incident. Here’s what I said about it at the time:

I got to meet Hans, the man behind Here comes the flood. I’ve been enjoying his blog since the very beginning of the Live Music Blog and it was really cool to shake his hand. He had a friend with him named Harm who asked me how my feet were doing, and that was quite a surreal moment for me. Wait, people actually do read this blog? I met him on my way out of the Disco Biscuits set onto the Duo, and we never crossed paths again during the evening. No big deal, though, I’ll FOR SURE be back to Amsterdam one of these days and Hans and I can go for a bike ride then.

After a year off from the festivities, they just announced their lineup and dates for the 5th Anniversary taking place March 21-23, 2010. The lineup big-dog is Umphrey’s McGee, once again, and they’ll be joined by Yonder Mountain String Band, Les Claypool, New Mastersounds and The Bridge. An important announcement from our friends at the Jam in the Dam:

After much feedback from the fans, we have come to the very difficult decision to consolidate the two weeks of Jam in the Dam. Please understand that this event is unlike any ever undertaken, and as such, presents new challenges, but also new opportunities for improvement.

After last year’s smashing success, and the camaraderie built up while there, splitting the shows and bands over two weeks turned out to be a less desirable situation for many folks. People that wanted to see both Umphrey’s McGee and the , were forced to choose, as they simply could not afford to stay away for ten days. The last thing we want to do was take a very special show, and detract from it in any way. This festival is here to stay, and whatever it takes to make it better, will be done.

What we plan to do:

The Eerste week show will now no longer take place. The Disco Biscuits will move to the Tweede week, and take the place of North Mississippi Allstars on the bill.

The bill for Jam in the Dam 2006, March 19-20-21, is now as follows:

Umphrey’s McGee
The Disco Biscuits
Sound Tribe Sector Nine
Benevento/Russo Duo
