One of the musical highlights from Thursday night’s Phish show at the Greek was just released as one of the official live videos from the band. I always forget how amazing the light show is during “Maze.” Classic Kuroda.
Plus, regarding the video crew, you could see these dudes running all around the stage with video cameras all weekend. I’m sure we’ll get some more highlights in the next few days.
The final night of Phish at the Greek was pretty epic. As usual, AT&T’s service in the area was nonexistent so I wasn’t able to post anything from the show. But I did manage to snag my third Pollock, and the show had an intense energy compared to the other nights that really felt like a proper fitting to the end of the run. My highlight of the first set was probably the strong “46 Days,” probably the best version I had ever heard. I need to go back and re-listen.
Plus, I won the opener pool with my pick of “AC/DC Bag.” Holla!
Set I: AC/DC Bag > Foam, Gotta Jibboo, Reba, Sleep Again, Army of One > Poor Heart > 46 Days > Tube > Character Zero Set II: Wilson > Light, Twenty Years Later, Harry Hood, Theme from the Bottom > 2001, Suzy Greenberg, Slave to the Traffic Light Encore: The Lizards*, First Tube
Set I: Chalk Dust Torture, Guyute, Ocelot, It’s Ice, Cities > The Moma Dance > Bathtub Gin > Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan Set II: Rock and Roll, Ghost > Mike’s Song > Simple > Backwards Down the Number Line, Show of Life, Seven Below -> Weekapaug Groove, You Enjoy Myself Encore: Good Times Bad Times
“Guyute” was a confident version and definitely the only one I’ve seen that felt like it had the energy the song deserves. “It’s Ice” was a nice return to something classic after “Ocelot” slow bubbling jam, but “Cities > Moma” was the absolute highlight of set one. The funk built slowly and never really let up for that 15-20 minutes (resulting in Berkeley Jam #1). Second set was so much fun, too. The song flow and choice really seemed to fit that mix of old and new, giving the band new life in a Mike’s Groove that may see more new songs find their way into the middle than the classics. They really seem to be open to exploring this whole show segment now, and my first “Show of Life” was fitting even though I’m waiting for night three to effectively 100% blow the roof off that place.
Night two ripped. Hoping for a blast-off sorta night three….see you in the Pollock line today at about 11am.
I was fortunate enough to have a photopass for the first night of Phish in Berkeley at the Greek Theatre, and I’m rushing out the door to get to the next show in time to line up for a Pollock again like I was able on night one. All in all, I felt like night one was a great, relaxing show for the band. It was an ease-in sorta setlist, featuring a new Languedoc guitar, a few well-placed Gordon bombs, and a fun crowd in one of the most beautiful venues of Northern California. Read on for my full photo set and a video of the “Tweezer Reprise” encore… READ MORE
Phish returns to the road tonight with the first of three nights here in the Bay Area. The historic Greek Theatre in Berkeley will play host, and we’ll be tweeting updates at @LiveMusicBlog and following along with all of our friends that are in town. For the rest of the action, make sure you follow @CoventryMusic, @Phortin, @YEMblog, @PhanArt and @PhishTwit to stay up on the streams, the setlists, the lot reports, and any of the hijinx that is going down in the lots. We’ll hope to keep this post updated with what’s happening on our end…
Stay tuned as the setlist starts rolling in!
Phish @ Greek Theatre, Berkeley, CA 8/5/10
Set I: Possum, Wolfman’s Brother, The Divided Sky, Funky Bitch, Kill Devil Falls, Halley’s Comet > Sample in a Jar, NICU, Bouncing Around the Room, Run Like An Antelope Set II: Down with Disease > Free, Alaska, Back on the Train, Maze, Joy, Tweezer, Fluffhead Encore: Stage Banter*, Loving Cup, Tweezer Reprise
* Stage Banter was a sign that Trey grabbed before encore, taking the opportunity to thank Paul for making him a new guitar.
The set opened with a siiiiiick “Timber Ho” -> “California Uber Alles” > “Tweezer” -> “Starship Trooper Jam,” which featured some spine-tinglingly funky Moog-work from Page and wook-cooking bass-bombs from Mike. There was heavy “Dave’s Energy Guide” and “Mind Left Body Jam” teasing in “Tweezer” as well. This ferocious medley of tunes was followed, however, by an intestinally distressing trio of “Prince Fuckerpants” > “Let Me Lie” > “Time Turns Elastic.”
This blog post by zzyzx over at Phish.net got me thinking, and we regularly get asked to provide an update to the fans on the latest and greatest rumor mill nonsense surrounding the band. I asked our friend @phortin to write up some of his thoughts… –Editor
We are less than ten days away from Phish’s continuation of Summer tour — AKA Leg 2. The band and the community will descend on the Bay Area, more precisely, The Greek Theatre in Berkeley for the only three-night run of Twenty-Ten (so far…)
That “so far” is what keeps the community abuzz in between tours apparently. Just as we follow Twitter for set list updates during tour, some, many, follow the rumors of future touring. With a community of Phish fans usually rocking the “living in the now” mindset, you would think that their futures market would be relatively carefree. Instead we agonize and try to predict where the “All-Request-Band” will go next, even if it’s five months in the future!
So what is the rumor mill swirling with this time? Well, not much coming from Captain Reliable (and herein lies the problem)…
Extensive Fall tour, West Coast only? October dates in Vegas at the Thomas & Mack? Three of a Kind flashbacks? Better to move it down the block to the Capshaw friendly MGM Grand? Does Texas get more than just a two hour festival set or is the tour galloping into Broomfield, CO for a stay at the AEG hyped 1st Bank Center?
But wait, what about Halloween? Are they taking a year off after the acclaimed Exile Set in Indio or donning another costume in Providence, no wait, scratch that, I mean Albany? The rumors don’t stop there. In November, do you know where your turkey and cranberry sauce are coming from? I sure don’t, but word is the Phish might be skipping Grandmother’s house for the Hampton Coliseum. Surprisingly, the dates that are the farthest away seem to be the most reliable: Madison Square Garden for NYE. But is it too early to mention a weeklong residency.
I expect there to be at least one stand out set at the Greek–when Phish arrived at Red Rocks last year, almost every set was a special one (I know I’m in the minority, but I really don’t get excited over the 7/30 show). After they are heated up, they will roll into Telluride–I think both shows in this extremely special place are going to be unbelievably balls to the wall amazing. With Phish having played almost every Gamehendge song over the past tour/year/era, the epic musical story seems to be on the tip of Trey’s tongue. After blowing up crowds with bust out over bust out, the only real bust out left–even bigger than Fuck Your Face–is a complete Gamehendge. You know Trey is thinking about it, and Telluride would be the perfect location for a daytime Gamehendge set.
Patrick called a “Ride Captain Ride” at the Greek forever ago, so we just wanted to get that down on paper now. Also, the third night of Greek is shaping up to be the world’s largest toga party if any of us have anything to say about it. I doubt you’ll see me in one of these, but if we can get some more people involved then we’ll have a fantastic sight on our hands.
And if Telluride gets a Gamehendge set, we can imagine seeing this happen.
And so we begin our countdown to the Greek shows and Phish’s return to the West Coast…
Flights of the Conchords recently made a stop in Berkeley at the Greek Theatre and photographer Edwin Zee was on hand to shoot the show. I’m sooooo bummed I missed this one. Over the Weekend: Flight of the Conchords [SF Weekly.com] When they started rapping their song “Hurt Feelings” the audience cried with laughter. In [...]
