Post image for Good News: Georgia Theatre is Rebuilding

CNN.com reports on the progress at the historic Georgia Theatre, which is in the midst of rebuilding after a fire gutted the entire venue last June.

The was one of those places where you could go to a show, and even if you had no idea who was playing that night, you were guaranteed to have a great time.

Press like this can only help their cause, which could be the reason for the nostalgic focus of the article.

A while back we posted about the Georgia Theatre’s efforts to raise money to rebuild their classic Atlanta venue after a tragic fire.

Hometown heroes, the Zac Brown Band, are stepping up to the plate to help them raise money and awareness by playing a benefit gig this Fri, Oct 30th at the nearby Fox Theatre. Tickets are $100 a piece, but proceeds go directly to The Georgia Theatre Rehabilitation Fund.

While it’s obviously for a good cause, it’s also a good chance to catch a band at a smaller, more intimate venue than the larger arenas and amphitheatres they’re starting to play these days. Say what you will, “Toes” is catchy as hell. I dig.

GA Theatre

I meant to post this a while back, because I wanted to continue to keep attention on the Georgia Theatre fire that destroyed most of the building in its current form. They’re raising money to help rebuild, so I figured I’d drop the info with a photo that came into our inbox after the event.

Here’s the info from their Rebuilding page:

We are working on a plan for rebuilding the . This is going to be a tough task. The interior was grandfathered into building codes that were as much as 70 years old. The new design will be required to meet all modern codes. This means that the rebuild will cost much more than the original; it also means that the interior will be all new. This combination of factors presents a quandary for us. How do you build a modern venue that functions properly and efficiently yet make it feel comfortable and nostalgic? Keeping in mind that it has to pay for itself or the whole effort is for nothing. This is our challenge.

In the days after the fire we were shocked. It seemed as though we had lost a brother and that he would never return. Then we started feeling the sympathy pour in from fans and artists all over the world. The press coverage and the support made us realize that this didn’t have to be the end. That this could, in fact, be a new beginning for the Georgia Theatre. We need your help in order to make this happen. We need to raise money to help save this beautiful art deco theatre so that it can remain the centerpiece of music and architecture in downtown Athens.

We have formed an alliance with The Georgia Trust, the country’s largest statewide, nonprofit preservation organization. You can donate to the Georgia Theatre rebuilding effort by CLICKING HERE or sending checks to:

georgia-theatreSad news in Athens, GA today as the historic Georgia Theatre was just damaged by a bad fire that broke out this morning around 7am. The damage was extensive, causing the roof to collapse and everything inside to be mostly destroyed.

From the venue’s website:

It is with immense emotion that we sadly report the burned down this morning. There are a lot more questions than answers right now and we will do our best to keep the public informed as we learn more.

We appreciate all of the support that the great folks of Athens have provided and the additional messages received from wonderful patrons from around the world.

THANK YOU!!!

Here’s video from the local Fox affiliate in Atlanta:

Power in the area was also cutoff so business just kinda stopped for everyone. And Perpetual Groove was set to open a two-night run there tonight, but they’re changing their plans to help support the employees of Georgia Theatre that have their work cut out for them in the future (if any work at all):

The amazing folks with Perpetual Groove are working their tails off. It is a pleasure to announce that Perpetual Groove will be performing a benefit concert at the Classic Center on Saturday, June 20. All tickets that were purchased for Friday and Saturday’s show at the Georgia Theatre will be honored. If you would still like to purchase a ticket, then CLICK HERE or go to the Classic Center box office. Doors are at 8pm and the show will start at 9pm.
