LMB NYC: This Week’s Concert Calendar (Nov. 7-13)

This week in NYC shows kicks off with a few repeats from last week’s list that are sticking around town: Blind Pilot @ Music Hall and the Drums @ the Bowery. We’ve also got some bigger shows of note this week, including the big hip-hop double bill of Jay-Z & Kanye West for two nights at MSG (Mon and Tues), and Foo Fighters with Social Distortion and The Joy Formidable on Sunday night, also at the Garden.

For something a little smaller on Tuesday, I’d suggest hitting the Sea and Cake at The Bowery Ballroom. I was impressed with their opening slot for Broken Social Scene last September, and anything with John McEntire (Tortoise) on drums is bound to be pretty solid in my opinion… READ MORE

North Coast Music Festival: Chemical Brothers, Umphreys, Bisco, Flying Lotus and more…

Last night during the second set of Umphrey’s McGee on Couch Tour, we got an announcement from keyboardist Joel Cummins regarding a festival that the band was going to be a part of in Chicago on Labor Day weekend. The festival is called the North Coast Music Festival and it’s going to be some serious heat for live music that weekend in the city. To get a lineup like this in Chicago starts to provides options to people besides the behemoth that is Lollapalooza, and the smaller and more eclectic and banging mix for your buck seriously puts this in good contention to be a standout festival of the year. Let’s hope for some bomb collaborations.

Catskill Chill Music Festival Lineup Announced

A new jamband-heavy music festival was announced a few days back which will bring the heads to the Catskills on the weekend after Labor Day. It’s called the Catskill Chill Music Festival and it’s set for September 10th & 11th, 2010 at Camp Minglewood in Hancock, New York. READ MORE

The Disco Biscuits have announced the initial lineup for Camp Bisco 9, their three-day festival in Mariaville, NY slated for the weekend July 15-17, 2010. As with previous Camp lineups, the festival will feature three nights of the Disco Biscuits and an eclectic mix of bands and DJs loosely geared towards electronic dance music.

Amidst the ongoing frenzy of festival lineup announcements, the Wakarusa Music Festival has announced their next round of lineup additions:

Widespread Panic, Umphrey’s McGee (2 sets including a late night), The Black Keys, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, 7 Walkers featuring Papa Mali and Bill Kreutzmann, State Radio, Dub Tribe Soundsystem, Fishbone, Mark Farina, Todd Snider, Mother Hips, Ott, Tortured Soul, Future Rock, Spacemen, MiM0SA, Pimps of Joytime (2 sets), That One Guy (2 sets), Ekoostik Hookah, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Great American Taxi, Constellations, The Dirty Heads, Lynx & Jamie Janover, Jay Nash (2 sets), Supervillains, The Moondoggies, The Bridge, Backyard Tire Fire (2 sets), The Heavy Pets, Spoonfed Tribe, Sunshine Jones, Kinetix, Truckstop Honeymoon (2 sets), Oakhurst (2 sets), Ben Miller Band , Somasphere and Radio Hiro.

With a few exceptions, it seems like Wakarusa is sticking close to their jam-heavy roots on this one. A number of similar festivals are on hiatus for 2010 (Rothbury and 10KLF), so it’ll be interesting to see how this year’s Wakarusa fares against the rest of the competition in the middle of the country. Like New Year’s Eve, Halloween is another holiday that a lot of bands choose to celebrate in style. There’s just something about mixing the live concert experience with all the fun and choas of Halloween that really brings out the freaks. While most bands typically play into the Halloween vibe in some way, touring bands often approach Halloween as an opportunity to really create a unique live music event. Just as we did with our New Year’s Eve concert round-up, we’ve compiled a list of Halloween concerts that will be going on this weekend (see below for the long list).

We have also noticed a few bands that are taking a similar approach to Halloween as Phish by doing some sort of “musical costume” and either covering another band’s music or playing a full show of thematic covers. Here are a few of the more interesting “musical costumes” we’ve seen announced this year:
