Like many local super groups, Dragon Smoke, a New Orleans group made up of Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Ivan Neville and Eric Lindell, formed in 2003 for a one-off Jazz Fest Super Jam gig and has played sporadically ever since. As the good word has spread about their rare blowouts, they’ve become a must-see staple for thrill-seeking JF fans at both the festival and late night scene. This fall, the band announced a multi-coast mini-tour and a new album in the works for 2012, kicking it off with a show at Tipitina’s last week.

The all-New Orleans collaboration known as Dragon Smoke (Robert Mercurio, Stanton Moore, Ivan Neville & Eric Lindell) announced this week a December West Coast tour of a few of California’s NOLA music hotspots. But before they set out on the run, they will be hunkering down in Tipitina’s for a Friday night funk-out to appease both their biggest fans and those of us who just can’t seem to make the Tuesday night thing in May. For those of you not familiar with Dragon Smoke, they have been holding down a spectacular gig at One Eyed Jacks on the Tuesday in between Jazz Fest weekends for the last couple of years and have become a sort of pop-up supergroup of the New Orleans music scene (with Jazz Fest and Jamcruise as their phonebooth). They are a mix of Galactic‘s rock solid rhythm section, the smooth organ-funk of Ivan Neville , and the Gulf Coast-meets-California country-soul of Eric Lindell (the tie that binds NOLA to the left coast) – making for one of my absolute favorite side projects in the city and one helluva show.

Post image for Late Night Spotlight: The Boom Boom Room Presents! Boogalooin’ at Jazz Fest 2011
The good folks over there at The Boom Boom Room have done it again. 2011′s edition of Boogalooin’ at Jazz Fest (in it’s 11th year) is a prime example of the collaborative spirit that brings together so many world class musicians, to late night gigs that can only been seen and heard in the haunts of New Orleans. This year they bring back (among many) supergroups FREQUINOX, The Whip! and Dragon Smoke for some mid-week action HQ’d at Frenchmen Street’s Blue Nile (Dragon Smoke will be at One Eyed Jacks). We are also very excited about tonights Stanton Moore Trio gig with Anders Osborne, as well as the swirling two Hammond attack of Sunday’s Worship My Organ (feat. Marco Benevento and Robert Walter). Get out there people!
Our Jazz Fest coverage over at @LMBNOLA is officially underway!

jam cruise 8 logoThe lineup for Jam Cruise 8 was announced earlier this week, and it’s really quite impressive as always.

Departing Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, 8 will set sail January 3-8, 2010 on board the beautiful MSC Poesia and will visit the tropical ports of Ocho Rios, Jamaica and George Town, Cayman Islands. With 5 days and nights aboard the ship, there is plenty of time to kick back with friends and see an unbelievable amount of music.

Who’s going?
