Derek Trucks Band

Derek Trucks Band announced that they’ll be going on hiatus for 2010. They’ve still got a number of shows left for ’09, and they also plan to release a live album in 2010.

Call me an amateur but I don’t think I had ever heard of Record Store Day before. It’s not too old, but I found it interesting when I was reading that the is releasing a special disc called Already Live just in honor of the event, so I did a bit of research. Turns out they have a website and everything.

At any rate, it was the DTB that got my attention so we’ll continue on with the news. Read on for the info on the release and for their upcoming tour dates. READ MORE

Editor’s note: in my haste in switching over the site to WordPress I forgot to make sure our podcast feed was rigged up correctly. I’m working on fixing it, but in the meantime you can come and stream the podcast on the site using the built in music player on the site. We’ve got a special guest podcast for our return to form (yet again) and we’re seriously would not want to miss a chance to spread a good message and some good tunes with a podcast following up the Vice Presidential debate. The title of the podcast says it all. Take it away, Ryan…

Hello Live Music Blog.com listeners and readers, this is Ryan Pedersen, Editor of livemusicpodcast.net and your guest host for Podcast #062. Justin and I have collaborated to bring you a special podcast to raise awareness of an issue that is very important to us. Voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states with some as early as October 4th. Even if you are not planning on voting we still strongly encourage you to register anyway, especially if you make the decision to vote when it’s too late.

The fact is that you really have nothing to lose by registering and the process is very quick and requires little effort. A great place to start is by going to non-partisan websites RocktheVote.com or HeadCount.org to begin the registration process or to check the voter registration deadlines in your state.

To help drive home the importance of voting I will be playing a compilation of politically charged audience recordings that were downloaded via archive.org and bt.etree.org. All of the artists that will be featured have open taping policies so we encourage you to download the rest of the concerts using the links provided. A big thanks go out to these bands for their open policies and the tapers, which without their efforts this show would not be possible. Please enjoy the music and if you haven’t already done so get registered to vote today!!

It is easy to see why Derek Trucks was sitting in with the Allmans at 12 and then joining as a semi-regular tour member at age 14. I can definitely understand why Eric Clapton took him on tour in 2006 and 2007. He is, in one word, a prodigy. He makes playing guitar look so easy…nonchalantly finger-picking his way through purposeful slide guitar melodies and solos like it was his…um…job.

His band, the Derek Trucks Band, played a private gig for Rolling Stone a couple weeks back at the Hard Rock Café Times Square. The show was the celebrate the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs list, and the staff chose DTB specifically for this night. As for the set, I thought it was an overall solid show. Highlights were the DTB staple “Soul Serenade” and an encore version of the Band’s classic “The Weight.” Trucks’ wife, musician Susan Tedeschi, added vocals and guitar on a few songs.

DTB is working on a new album due out in early 09. Read on for my photos from the night…

For my second podcast, I decided to go with a slide guitar theme, piecing together a few live tracks featuring some of my favorite players of fretless slide guitars like the lap steel, Weissenborn, and straight-up 6-string electric guitar. Enjoy!

Total running time: 40:43

Sidenote:
By the way, if you like the theme of this podcast, but are disappointed that your favorite guitarist didn’t make the cut, it is likely that I just don’t have a good quality recording, don’t know about them, or didn’t want it to be too long. If that’s the case, feel free to make a suggestion. Just be sure to send me a link or a copy, and I’ll do my best to include it on a version II of the same theme.

Tracklisting after the jump…
