Last night during the second set of Umphrey’s McGee on Couch Tour, we got an announcement from keyboardist Joel Cummins regarding a festival that the band was going to be a part of in Chicago on Labor Day weekend. The festival is called the North Coast Music Festival and it’s going to be some serious heat for live music that weekend in the city. To get a lineup like this in Chicago starts to provides options to people besides the behemoth that is Lollapalooza, and the smaller and more eclectic and banging mix for your buck seriously puts this in good contention to be a standout festival of the year. Let’s hope for some bomb collaborations.

Check out their Twitter page here and follow along for the official lineup announcement. We have it on good authority that this is the lineup we’ll be seeing when it gets dropped.

Remember Radiohead’s “From the Basement” videos?

It turns out those weren’t the only being captured by Nigel Godrich and crew. I’m not sure exactly when this new site launched, but FromtheBasement.tv is now a virtual treasure trove of amazing live (in studio) performances by a veritable who’s who of amazing contemporary bands and artists.

There’s simply so much good video on this site and it’s all high-quality. Here are just a few choice selections:

Andrew Bird | Beck | Cold War Kids | The Fleet Foxes | Gnarls Barkley | Jamie Lidell | My Morning Jacket | The Raconteurs | Radiohead | Sonic Youth | The Shins | White Denim

Thanks to Bob Lefsetz for the tip!

The second incarnation of Rothbury Festival is back on the Fourth of July weekend with a lineup that will satisfy any jamband fan living in these great independent states, and I’m just now getting around to posting the lineup for everyone to see (not that you haven’t already seen this elsewhere). I’m already booked for High Sierra or I would be hitting this festival myself, but lucky for us the fine folks behind Festival are sponsoring the site for the month leading up to the festival. And we get to celebrate that by giving away a pair of tickets for all 4-days of the festival. READ MORE

Cold War Kids – “Hang Me Out to Dry” @ Outside Lands [YouTube]

I was seriously excited for the first day of Lollapalooza because I got a chance to see tons of great bands with my friends back in my hometown. That was incredible. But I was also insanely fortunate to have the chance to attend a like-minded festival put on about three weeks later in my new hometown by “the Superfly folks” as called them during the Primus set on Saturday. was going to be headlining the first day. Seriously?

Man, I was seriously a fortunate music critic this summer.

The first set of Outside Lands for me was Cold War Kids and I managed to snag myself a spot in the VIP standing area on the side of the hill somewhat close to the stage they were on. I only brought my point-and-shoot so none of my photos came out totally amazing. But the band was quite incredible from what I saw. “Hang Me Out to Dry” sounded as smooth as it does on the album and they were able to get the crowd quite pumped up for the rest of the night.
