Bumbershoot

just released their official video for “How I Know” via Pitchfork. It’s a haunted affair, a video befit for a release around Halloween more closely than a release on the second day of August. But clearly the project is back at home getting some work done before hitting this year’s Music Festival, , and (which is indeed closer to Halloween) along with select tour dates along the way. will be joining them on a bunch of the dates. Read on for the video and the band’s current tour dates. >>>

Bumbershoot 2010 Welcome SignWelcome to !

Well, it’s been a long week of recovering from “festival flu” after just two days at Bumbershoot 2010; it was so bad that we couldn’t get out of bed Monday morning to catch the last day of the festival. We did, however, make it to the second day and snapped some good photos from the Sunday sets. READ MORE

Budos Band KEXP Studio Sessions

2010, Day One….

First stop for the day was the KEXP in-studio session with The Budos Band, playing a number of tracks from their new Budos Band III album. The band is self-described as Afro-soul, and pretty much every song the band plays makes you feel like you’re Indiana Jones running from the enormous rolling boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Seriously. If that’s not enough to get you to take a listen then nothing else I say could do the trick. Thanks to KEXP’s website, you can hear the entire session at http://kexp.org/streamarchive/streamarchive.asp. Enter “Saturday, September 4th” for the date, and “2:29 PM” for the time, and you can stream the entire 30-minute performance in a number of formats.

Next we headed over to catch Wheedle’s Groove, a collection of funk and soul musicians from the 60′s and 70′s who got together in 2004. They were welcomed onto the stage by Mayor Mike McGinn, who proclaimed September 4th, 2010 as “Wheedle’s Groove Day” in the city of . They had about 20+ different musicians on the stage over the course of their set and played songs from a huge range of artists, and even threw in a soulful cover of “Hey Jude” for a crowd singalong. Who doesn’t love Labor Day Weekend? One last three-day weekend to close out the summer months and music to see across the country: the inaugural North Coast Music Festival in Chicago, Jazz Aspen Snowmass in Aspen, FYF Fest in Los Angeles, plenty of East Coast stuff that I’m not even aware of, and last but not least, Bumbershoot Festival here in (which I’ll be covering all weekend here at LMB).  If you’re in the area the forecast is 70° and not a cloud in the sky for most of the weekend, and last-minute day passes are about $50 and cheaper if you opt for the non-mainstage ticket option.  Regardless, here’s 10 bands acts I’ll be checking out this weekend and be sure to stop here at in the next few days for some photo coverage of the festival. Also, I’ll be tweeting occasionally at @burning_oak so follow along there if you’re interested in following along… READ MORE

The lineup for Bumbershoot 2010 in was just announced, too. They’ve tapped Bob Dylan, , Weezer, Hole and more for this year’s festival set for Labor Day weekend, which is marking the 40th year that the event has been taking place. Our buddy Kane will likely be there covering the event for us, and he already pinged me and said he’s looking forward to the event.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

in the rain

Unlike 2008, which was a gorgeous 70-degrees-and-sparsely-cloudy weekend, 2009 was a much more Seattlesque weekend.  The Yeah Yeah Yeahs kicked off our Sunday afternoon, but between the ugly weather and a lackluster crowd, the show never really took off.  I have to admit that I’m only a fan of four or five of the band’s “bigger” songs, but even so, the only section of the crowd that was really amped up for the set were the die-hard fans front and center.

We made a stop at and later the band (United States of Electronica).  Extra Golden was enjoyable, but we were excited to see U.S.E. and left early to do so, but it turned out to be a disappointing set.  It did, however, make for an opportune time to visit the beer garden.

We tried to sit through ’s hometown heroes Common Market, but a few songs into the set we just weren’t feeling the music and left, wondering what else we should try and see.  As luck would have it, we wandered by a comedy show titled Laff just as people were entering, and managed to snag two (warm and dry) seats for an hour long stand up show by 5-6 comedians.  Overall some O.K. and some hilarious jokes were thrown out, but either way it was well worth our time.

The highlight of the day was definitely Michael Franti & Spearhead.  Franti has always put on a great show, but after seeing him 3-4 times in the summer of 2005, I haven’t been inclined to see him again.  The shows were fun, but the set lists were too similar for my taste and I decided to give it a couple years before I caught another set.  My timing to catch another show was perfect, however, because he’s added enough new material to spice things up a bit, and his act has translated well to a main stage performance like the one at Bumbershoot.  The band ripped through a medley of songs, rarely taking a full break between songs and making a number of smooth transitions from full band to Franti solo and acoustic.  A few person highlights include  “Everybody Deserves Music,” “Sound of Sunshine,” and “Never Too Late.”  Naturally the crowd, most of whom I’m guessing are new to Franti’s music, were fired up for “Say Hey (I Love You),” the band’s recent Top 40 hit.  Of course inviting Jason Mraz on stage to sing along in front of a crowd of Jason Mraz fans doesn’t hurt your cause…

A quick stop at reminded me that I wasn’t on ecstasy like everyone else in the room, so we got out of there pretty quickly and caught an impressive set by The .  The duo gives off simultaneous vibes of art-school indie/prog rock in the best way possible, and watching them play you can tell band members Brandon Summers and Benjamin Weikel have very precise control over the sounds escaping through the speakers.  Overall the band played a great set, one of the few on Sunday that left me wanting to know more about the artist.

Dyno Jamz Horn Section

Horn Section

The first day of started early at 12:30 with an indoor set by Dyno Jamz.  An up-and-coming funky hip-hop act from here in , they recently won the EMP Sound Off Competition, an under 21 battle of the bands now approaching its 8th year.  Supported by the grandeur of the EMP Sky Church’s enormous lighting rig, the band ripped through a solid hour long set filled with some new material and a few spoken word moments as well. Bumbershoot 2009 Preview

Festivals

Seattle’s musical grab-bag of a festival known as Bumbershoot is coming up September 5-7, and I’ll be headed back this year to check out the activities. Unbeknownst to most of the festival-goers, Bumbershoot is an arts festival as opposed to a strictly music festival, and has a wide variety of options outside of the live [...]
