Post image for NYC Venue News: CGBG’s, Southpaw, Brooklyn Bowl

I’ve been seeing a bunch of updates about local -area venues this week, so I thought I’d put together a little roundup.

First, Gothamist is claiming to have it on good authority that the now-infamous NYC club, , is officially due for a comeback: READ MORE

Last night, I caught a killer show at . Unlike the last time the band played the Bowl during an epic 2010 snowstorm, BP had a huge turnout for this one. The band really stepped up their game last night, delivering a solid two-set dance throwdown for the crowd. I snapped a few photos and thought I’d post them up along with the setlist and some vids from YouTube. READ MORE

Post image for PHOTOS / VIDEOS / REVIEW: Steve Kimock & Friends @ Brooklyn Bowl, 11/5/11

On Saturday night I caught another fantastic show by & Friends in . I last saw Steve & co. this spring doing a residency at Sullivan Hall with a rotating cast of interesting musicians. And although the lineup and vibe of Saturday’s show was quite a bit different, my overall takeaway was pretty similar to the last round:

Overall, this show was just the quintessential Kimock, featuring a little taste of all of the signature styles that make him such a great–and underrated–guitarist. We heard ripping blues solos, powerful slide leads, emotional minor-chord passages, unique & interesting rhythm work, and of course, that light, lilting and seemingly effortless finger-dancing-across-the-fretboard that is just patented Kimock.

That sums up my experience on Saturday pretty nicely. But one of the biggest difference from last time I saw Steve was definitely the lineup. Steve’s friends on this latest tour include on drums, keyboard funkmaster , and Steve’s long-time collaborator, , ripping things up on the funky bass. Also, for a number of tunes throughout the night, Steve’s son Morgan, added some tasteful percussive layers to Ingram’s drumming, and Peter Apfelbaum joined the band on sax, keys and percussion. Post image for VIDEO: Mike Gordon sat in with George Porter Jr. @ Brooklyn Bowl, 9/16/11

While I was photographing my way through Austin City Limits Music Festival last night, stopped by to jam with George Porter, Jr., Eric Krasno and Adam Deitch. Here’s their run through of The Meters classic, “Africa” (in two parts). Thanks to YouTube user Skebetine for uploading these so quick… >>>

Our friend Nick Irving went to see at last Friday night and got some amazing shots from the band while they rocked the first of two shows that night. Openers and got things started that night. >>>

Sadly, I couldn’t make it to last night’s Bustle In Your Hedgerow show @ , but judging by reports and a couple videos posted today, it looks like it was one for the books.

Check out sitting in on drums for “The Wanton Song” (above), as well as this up-close-and-personal view of “No Quarter”…

Comments on Concert Listings:
For this week’s post I used Bandsintown.com‘s concert listings. Overall, I like BIT’s ease of tracking, slick interface, and their Facebook app. I also dig their concert cloud interface and found it useful for preparing this post. However, there were a few shows missing that I saw on other listings, like Railroad Earth. This may have been due to the artists that are automatically being tracked (or not tracked) in my account, but it could have been avoided if there was a a simplified search option allowing me to look for upcoming shows in all of NYC (note: typing “” into the main search box did not work; it should).

As you may have noticed, I’m still playing a little catch-up after my trip down to Austin for SXSW last week. A couple days before I left town, I was lucky enough to catch a second show of ’s “” residency at , now in its second year. Although it was my first attempt with a new camera/lens combo, I was able to nab a few decent photos which are all included in the gallery below.

Also, be sure to check out Brooklyn Bowl’s own Media Recap of the event. READ MORE
