It’s always exciting news here when we see that Radiohead has expanded their 2012 tour dates to now include some summer dates in Europe. There’s still room for the band on that Coachella lineup(s) as well as the clear gap in the beginning of June when the band will probably be one of the major headliners at Bonnaroo again. Yes, that’s a guess only and I “may not have facts to support this” but it feels right given what we’ve seen hit the announcement wires thus far.
This is one of the shows of the year if you are into experimental, dramatic rock music. For what is sure to be one of the most spectacular and bitingly intense performances to ever unfold inside the former juice shop/brothel/gym, Explosions in the Sky will be blowing the gaskets out of Tipitina’s on Wednesday night. A lot of bands could learn from watching these guys, their ability to patiently build a crescendo into a rousing, larger-than-life musical exposition is just about unparalleled. My brief glimpse of their set at Bonnaroo this year was enough to thoroughly pique my interest in the band as a live force and luckily, the Texan collective is currently touring in support of their first album in four years (aptly-titled Take Care, Take Care, Take Care) and stopping in this week. The WTUL-presented show is at 9 p.m., Wye Oak will be opening and tickets are available here for $19 advance and will run $21 if available at the door.
Regardless of your thoughts on this year’s lineup, to the festival’s credit, the Voodoo Experience always does a bang-up job of compiling one of the most unique, wholly eccentric and random yearly lineups of any American festival. No one outside of the Rehage camp could’ve envisioned this sorta lineup and I’m actually kind of excited about it after having been to Bonnaroo and ACL this year (two great festivals, but two with a great deal of crossover acts). Doubt I’ll get another chance to see Soundgarden, Blink-182, Fatboy Slim, Peelander Z and Snoop in the same weekend.
Check out this pro-shot video from the STS9 late-night at Bonnaroo earlier this summer, the “Circus” encore that served to get people through that inevitable awakening that comes with staying up through the night to see daylight return. You can see the sun peaking through in the shots out towards the crowd, and Murph calls up the Roy Ayers classic, “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” to send the crowd on their merry way after he enthusiastically thanks the audience for sharing their love with the band. “Classic” STS9 goodness right here…
Bootsy Collins & the Funk University is touring in support of his new record Tha Funk Capital of the World, enrolling fans nationwide in his Funk University on a nightly basis and bringin’ the kind of party to town seldom seen anywhere else. His stop at Tipitina’s on the heels of a buzzed-about Bonnaroo set marks a long-awaited return to THE Funk Capital of the World and it was clear from the get-go that even a place largely built on funk music was poorly equipped to handle this kind of three bass attack and the kind of joyful noise Bootsy and Friends were bringing, covering Dre, Jimi, Sly and of course, George Clinton – nearly sending Tip’s into orbit. Outta this world
Last week, before heading up to Manchester for a midday set at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, synth-pop duo Matt & Kim stopped into the House of Blues for a Wednesday night show. LMB NOLA’s Julia Pretus was there and took some really great pics of the set, see below.
Videos from Deerhunter, Twin Shadow, Futurebirds, Widespread Panic, My Morning Jacket, Mavis Staples, Rotary Downs, Band of Skulls, Gypsyphonic Disko, John Bell, Hanggai, Alberta Cross and the Shpongletron Experience from this past weekend’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.
If you’re not lucky enough to be heading down to Manchester, TN for this weekend’s festivities, you’ll once again have a chance to catch a slew of live sets through the official Bonnaroo webcast. The B’roo folks have teamed up with Vevo for this year’s broadcast, which will feature sets from the likes of Arcade Fire, Explosions in the Sky, My Morning Jacket, Mumphord & Sons, and Widespread Panic, among many others. The webcast kicks off Friday at noon CT.
Also, with the festival celebrating its tenth year in existence, they’ve created an official theme song…a bluegrass-tinge number performed by members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Del McCoury Band. Check it out:
If you dig deep enough into the early pre-history of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, celebrating it’s 10th Anniversary next weekend, or you know where the name “Bonnaroo” comes from – a 1974 Dr. John album called Desitively Bonnaroo, you’ll find the event’s roots are deeply entrenched right here in New Orleans. If you didn’t buy your tickets for Bonnaroo 2011, you better start scouring the message boards for extras. Superfly just announced that general admission passes for the festival are now sold-out.
