Rolling Stone has the exclusive on the return to from a band I’ve always loved a ton: Luscious Jackson. They recently started tweeting that they were putting together new music and RS has the new track called, “Are You Ready?” In the interview they mention that they will indeed return to do some shows at some point, but not until they finish a full album worth of material and rehearse some of their old stuff. Although most New Yorkers are probably still thinking about last night’s Giants Super Bowl win (or are at least nursing a nice football hangover), I’m taking one for the team and already looking ahead to a week of NYC-area shows. As usual, there are plenty of good options this week, including Jay-Z, Bjork, tUnE-YaRds, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe covering the Rolling Stones, and two nights each of Primus and Tea Leaf Green. Read on for all the highlights as I see ‘em… READ MORE
Just another week of live music in New York City…meaning lots of great options for the concert-going public. This week, we’ve got plenty of solid rock shows (including Smith Westerns and American Babies), some buzz-worthy electronic acts (like Tycho and Skrillex), and a few artists that fall somewhere in between (Bjork, Eclectic Method). Read on for the highlights and linkage. READ MORE
Bjork, the 13-time Grammy nominee from Iceland, released her sixth album, Volta, in 2007. Before embarking on what would become a two-year-long tour to promote the record, Bjork and her band held a recording session at Olympic Studios in London. Voltaic collects those live-to-tape recordings, which includes selections from Volta and several previous albums: Medulla, Homogenic, Post and Vespertine. The entire album can be streamed now at NPR Music, where there is also a video of Bjork performing “Declare Independence.”
Bjork has made a largely triumphant comeback look easy. Saturday Night Live performance, check. Show up at Coachella and wow everyone, check. Go straight to NYC and wow everyone again, check. Sell out the Chicago date before Justin was able to grab tickets, check. Enamor bloggerseverywhere, check.
What’s next for the Icelandic sensation? I’m happy to report that she’ll be allowing NPR to broadcast one of her New York City performances on Saturday, May 5. Don’t miss this one. I know I don’t want to…
I’m really kicking myself right now after watching my TiVo’d copy of last night’s Saturday Night Live. Bjork was the musical performer and I spaced on getting the Chicago tickets for her upcoming tour. As it’s now wildly sold-out, I’m sure I’ll be missing a really fantastic chance to catch her once again.
And given her stage setup and collaborators this around, I’m really, really wishing I would have gotten tickets. This rendition of “Earth Intruders” is triumphant, hypnotic, and just a little frightening — all very good things in my book.
I’ve been working on rounding up some of my stuff from SXSW but I thought I’d get a quick post up in the meantime. I caught up on some feed reading this morning and noticed that Bjork had announced some tour dates in conjunction with her scheduled 2007 Coachella Music Festival appearance…
May 02 – New York – Radio City Music Hall
May 05 – New York – United Palace Theater
May 08 – New York – Apollo Theater
May 12 – Chicago – Auditorium Theatre
May 15 – Denver – Red Rocks Amphitheatre
May 19 – San Francisco – Shoreline Amphitheatre
May 23 – Vancouver- Deer Lake Park
While some of her new music can be slightly over-the-top, I still enjoy Bjork’s music and I still list the time I saw her in 2001 as one of my favorite concert experiences ever. The hair on my neck stood up straight multiple times during the concert, and the clap-happy song, “It’s In Our Hands,” ended the show and got the whole crowd to smile wide.
Fans of the site might not to be too aware but I’ve always been a huge fan of Bjork — that sexy little muffin of an Icelandic pop sensation turned vocal breakout solo artist. While I find her music to be a little too off-the-deep-end lately, it was always phenomenal and magnetic to me before that…
