Post image for REVIEW / PHOTOS / VIDEO: 7 Walkers @ Tipitina’s 10/18/11
From the moment I entered Tipitina’s, it was plain to see 7 Walkers came to steal some face – and take the opportunity to get the well-worn tie-dyes out from the dresser drawers. The balcony and backdrop were draped in multi-colored tapestries, an oil paint artist was waiting for the first set to start so he could begin an improv experiment (a la STS9 live painting), a dead head by the bar was counting the multiple tie-dye’s draped over his shoulder. Best of all, Professor Longhair overlooked the band below, cosmically lit up in kaleidoscopic fashion from the first note through the second encore. Fall’s first chill winds blew in through the doors as the quartet opened with Grateful Dead’s “Space”, quickly warming up as the band segued into a funky rendition of the always-poignant “He’s Gone.” Effortlessly interspersing Dead classics like “Bird Song”, a healthy sampling of their new material, and a Meters staple (“Just Kissed My Baby”), 7 Walkers tore their way through set one – with a little help from the one and only Big Sam on “Eyes of the World” and the 7W original stone groove instrumental “For the Love of Mr. Okra” before set break.

7 Walkers make their first stop at Tipitina’s tomorrow night for what will sure be a fun evening on Napoleon Ave. The still new supergroup have popped up a few times in the city since forming last year (including a few songs at JoJo Hermann’s Down On The Bayou III, a sold out late-night Jazz Fest show at the old Scottish Rite Temple and a blistering set at The Rusty Nail’s “Day Of The Dead” festival…), but have yet to put down a full on Tipitina’s gig, a rite of passage for any band with any roots in the city of New Orleans.

Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, the rhythm section behind The , is hitting the road this summer as The promising some highly danceable electronic and percussion driven grooves. Peep the interesting choice of bandmates on this next run…

But the 2010 incarnation of the Rhythm Devils is guaranteed to be unlike anything that’s come before—the dynamic mix of the musicians’ individual but complementary styles and approaches is sure to lead to some serious sparks. “It’s a great combination,” says Hart. “You have the deep trance music from Nigeria and West Africa that Sikiru brings to us and there’s Davy who at any moment just might rip the sky apart with his guitar and Andy Hess is a real gem of a bass player. Joining us for the first part of the tour is the ‘one man band’ and on the second part of our tour is Tim Bluhm, who will bring his ferocious California guitar style and beautiful vocals to the mix.”

Dates after the jump. Keller also just put out a new album of covers called Thief. Anyone get a chance to listen to it yet? How does it stack up to all things Keller? READ MORE
