Post image for Tour Dates: Big Light Release Animals in Bloom

The boys in San Francisco’s Big Light will tour this summer in support of their debut album, Animals In Bloom. I see these guys as spectators at just about every show I go to these days. I’ll be seeing them perform and hang out at High Sierra as well, and they’ll be opening for Apollo Sunshine at the Independent on August 4th as THE pre-party to Phish’s three night run at the Greek. If anyone’s planning on hitting these shows, get in touch and let us know. For anyone else uninitiated, we did a podcast a while back featuring a strong 30 minutes from their Langerado set a few years back.

If there is a worse night of the week to see a gig than Wednesday I don’t know what it is. Wednesday is hump day; three days of work have already tired you out, but you still have two more staring you down, so it’s not always best to go all night. That said, the right show can change all that. A great concert with the band and the crowd feeding off each other’s energy can make you forget about all your midweek woes.

I was really hoping Wednesday night’s Apollo Sunshine show at Mercury lounge was going to be one of those gigs. I hadn’t actually checked out much of ’s music prior to the show, but I had heard enough people sing their praise that I was really looking forward to checking out a new band. When I heard that in the spirit of the season they would actually be appearing as The Experience, donning costumes straight out of Hair and playing Hendrix covers I was totally sold.

Unfortunately it was the spirit of Wednesday that owned the night. I’m not entirely sure if it was a lack of energy from the crowd that through the band off, or if their was something slightly off with Apollo Sunshine that led to a weak crowd. Whatever it was, something wasn’t quite clicking at . READ MORE

The Apollo Sunshine tour rolls on further with three nights (starting tonight) as The Experience, a tribute-esque performance with costumes and music celebrating the art of Jimi Hendrix. Sam’s going to be there tonight and I’m sure it’s going to rule. Then the band rolls through the rest of the country supporting their fantastic release, Shall Upon Noise, as the opener for Dead Confederate, a band I saw at SXSW and didn’t really think too much of.

Apollo Sunshine announced some tour dates last week in support of their new album, Shall Noise Upon, a fantastic piece of music front-to-back and one that I’ve already spent a lot of time on. I even got to buy Jeremy, the drummer, a beer at the Benevento/Russo Duo show at the Mojito. I complimented him on the new album and how I was truly grateful to be able to get an album like that early. I asked him if they had any dates booked coming up and he had mentioned that this tour was in the works and that they planned on playing San Francisco sometime in November. Expect more dates to get announced.

I tried my best to keep up with the reports from this past weekend, but I also tried to get away from the computer to check the Everyone Orchestra here in SF. Unfortunately my press contact’s list must have been a bit borked because I was told my name wasn’t on the list (and also that I wasn’t the only one that thought my name would be). Craptacular.

We’ll have our update from APW day three up today (hopefully). Also I’ve been meaning to write up some words from the Special Disco Version show I saw last Thursday, so stay tuned to the site for updates…

Apollo Sunshine @ 12 Galaxies, SF 6/26/08One of the first shows I caught when I got to San Francisco was the Apollo Sunshine / Big Light show that I opted to see instead of Fleet Foxes, which I’m still torn on whether or not that decision will haunt me for the rest of my life considering that Fleet Foxes are like, huge now. But the show was seriously tight; the new stuff this band was kicking out just had me so mesmerized and awestruck that I’ve long waited for their new album to get released so I can get a taste of the songs again. Their Archive page hasn’t gotten much love in a while and this new album was going to be my ticket to “music stuck in my head” salvation, that feeling you get where you can finally re-listen to something that has been haunting your brain for days or weeks prior. Today my musical prayers were kindly answered.

JamBase just did a post updating everyone that they had a embedded copy of Apollo’s new album, Shall Noise Upon, and after two listens through I’m convinced this is the best new album that I’ve listened to all day. I know that’s not saying much, but still. Read on to give it a listen yourself, and let’s see what else is going on…
