So, it’s hilarious that for as many times Trey said “This is it…” or “We’re done” with regards to the Phish breakup, he goes right back and lets himself say “Well, I might eat my words years from now…”
From the Illinois Entertainer (my emphasis added)…
So keep all Phish questions at bay, because they’re not getting back together anytime soon . . . right?“It’s so funny that nobody’s asked me that! We’re definitely not now, and I would never do that because it was all the rage. All I’ll say to that is I’ve said so many stupid things in the past, that have come out of my mouth, if there’s one thing I’m finally starting to learn is I don’t know what’s going to happen. But I’d like to play music for a long time and I love those guys. Who knows?”

I, for one, would never want Phish to get back together. Please don’t. Trey, if you’re reading this, don’t do it, dude.
Why not? It might not be the best shows ever but it still would probably be better than 70VP.
Ha! I think I’ve got to agree with you on that one. I just got done listening to Shine again and I’m just not impressed.
Phish walked away from it all and I don’t see that there’s any way those guys could come together in the same way. Especially the way Trey is right now; he’s all focused on himself. I don’t think he could ever give himself up like that again for the sake of a four-person group. It’s Trey’s band now and I don’t ever want Phish to become that (edit: even though I know Trey always called the shots anyways…).
Well that’s why I want Phish back. Phish couldn’t be Trey and the Treyettes; to reunite, he’d have to humble himself some.
I just wholeheartedly agree with that; well said, zzyzx.
All of the shows lately where Trey has been impressive have been ones where he hasn’t been in charge (e.g. The moe.nami benefit) I think he’s someone who needs people to push back in order to make his songs better. On his own he’s ok, but when he has someone challenging him, he’s so much better.
The irony, of course, is that he buys into the cult of the artist where he doesn’t want his vision to be diluted at all. I can understand why that would be the case, but he needs to be creating music with people who can tell him no if he wants to make anything really interesting.
I kind of agree with Justin; while a reunion would certainly be better than the Shine-a-lot band, I don’t think Phish should get back together anytime soon. The music and the whole experience at Conventry was proof to me that this band needed to stop for a looong time.
I really think Trey did the right thing by calling it off. He’s still a ripping musician and he can do whatever he wants. Good for him for putting out a pop record. That said, I haven’t heard anything to compel me to buy his record or go see his show.
You guys are crazy not to want a Phish reunion…sure it wouldn’t be NYE 1995, or even NYE 2003 for that matter, but it would be four demigods making beautiful music together like they used to. There was nothing like the Phish concert experience, and even if they come back as a slightly different entity, there never will be anything like it.
ZZ is right about the Trey-needs-to-be-pushed aspect, and I’m not sure Trey will ever find that consistently outside of his old band. I was at the Treymoe.deski Tsunami Benefit and I saw what it was like for him to play with talent. I went to Jones Beach and I saw him step up when he played with Warren Haynes. This guy needs better musicians, and whether he knows it right now or not, he will realize this and eventually cave. He will.
To not want Phish back is to say you don’t want to win the lottery. Outside of a Mega Millions ticket, I think the thing I want most in this world is to see another (rehearsed) show. Seriously. I know it won’t be the same, but I don’t care. I just want to fall back into that comfort zone of the band’s sweet jams, Kuroda’s sick lights and a phatty grilled cheese in the lot after the show.
Trey, don’t listen to my friend Justin, he knows not what he speaks…
Trey Anastasio: Phish reunion?
Mixed feelings on this one.
After seeing Trey at Vegoose, I won’t be paying $45 to see that show anytime soon……but wouldn’t want them back in their ‘Coventry’ form either -that was just nasty.
For him to even make a comment like that when he knows how many thousands of phans are just waiting for that day to come kind of sucks, know what I mean? I’m just getting used to life WITHOUT Phish and here Big Red goes spewing nonsense about something that will probably never happen.
In saying that, I will gladly fork over a month’s pay to tour with the boys should it ever come to pass. I’m only human…..
First off, think of the pressure the guy has. Thousands of people are taking cues from the tiniest things he says. He has a lot of people pissed at him right now (did anyone here his taunts on the Sirius broadcast? “You can only call me if you’re NOT fucking pissed at me. I guess that’s why no one is calling.”), so for him to say “never” not only feels stupid but will also piss people off even further. He knows he can’t win either way, so a shrug and a “maybe” is the only thing he can do.
So, I guess what I’m saying is, everything needs to breathe a bit before any sort of reunion should happen. The whole “demigods” thing is one of the reasons they (ahem, he) felt the need to stop.
All of this said, I just listened to the 1998 Utah Dark Side of the Moon show for the first time. Goddamn that is some inspiring stuff.
Got that disc in my car stereo right now -insane!
11.2.98 is probably one of the best Phish shows on record–it’s not even debatable.
8/1/98 at Alpine Valley is certainly up there for me. It was time for them to move on but not for good. Maybe a 5 to 10 year gap.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again -the world is a better place with Phish than it is without Phish.
I realize there’s a lot of ’stuff’ they may need to work through, and they may not sound like Phish pre-hiatus, they may suck, but if they’re going to give it a whirl, how can we not support them? We really don’t know what they’ll sound like should they play together again, do we?
People change, shit happens, they’re just human -I, for one, will be seeing as many of those shows as I can if, for no other reason, I love those songs!!

it doesn’t make any sense to me why people infer that trey’s ego is out of control. the phish breakup had nothing to do with trey wanting to stand in the spotlight without his “best friends”. the breakup was simple, and at this point i think it should be generally understood- drugs and chaos. the phish scene was out of control, and multiple band members were unhealthy; everyone has access to this info, im not saying anything new here. i saw trey in at bates college in maine with 70 volt parade and was blown away, to be honest. though the stuff with the rest of the band was impressive, the highlight was of course his solo phish material acoustic set. when trey soloed while the audience sang “limb by limb” over and over i couldnt contain myself. trey lit up with an enormous smile, talked about how much he loves and respects phish, i felt all warm and fuzzy inside. now, at the ripe old age of 20 and without much live phish experience, and none pre-hiatus, i know that i missed the real phish experience. but if theyre healthy, happy, and ready to get back together why would anyone object? just because theyre not the same as they once were doesnt mean that theyre not a beautiful entity. who could honestly give a fuck about purity if they were grooving once more at a phish show?
amen to that. groove on.
dude, i think a phish reunion would be amazing. mostly becuase i never got to see them,i dont think anyone fits together anywhere close to how those guys fit, they are the only people who can really be the band and i would do anything so see that
I miss those guys more than ever. We will never see another Jam band that can pull off what they already done. They are the real deal, there chemistry is unbelievable, Trey is a freaking rock star and it would be my dream come true to see those guys back on tour. I am ready for the real deal.
