Program Council did not let us down this year with Altitude Festival bringing Robotic Pirate Monkey, GRiZ, Zion I, Gramatik, and MSTRKRFT to Balch Fieldhouse on CU Boulder campus. What a sick night of diverse artists. I’ve got some awesome pictures I’m stoked to share with everyone. Check ‘em out below… Read more…

Today I begin my journey home from Jazz Fest 2012 looking ahead at about 2,500 miles of driving and only four hours sleep. But that’s the perfect start to work through my own memories of both amazing weekends of music that were consumed while the Live Music Blog team was in full effect down in New Orleans. I’ll have more updates personally just as I soon as I can get to reliable wifi, but until that time make sure you head over to LMB NOLA for all the action that we got into over the span of the past 10 days or so. So much good stuff and yet already so little time to start planning for Jazz Fest 2013…
TMZ has reported that Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of the Beastie Boys has passed away after a struggle with cancer.
It’s been about six full days for me at this year’s Jazz Fest and I’ve still got tons of updates coming from our team here, including reviews of the Megalomaniac’s Ball on Wednesday night and some video highlights from last night’s Johnny Vidacovich trio show last night that sold out the Maple Leaf. I’m absolutely loving this festival, that’s for sure. I’ll be making it back here as many years in a row as I can. But for any folks staying at home this year, YouTube has partnered up with a few sponsors to offer three days of live webcasts from this year’s festival. Check out the announcement below and the full schedule after the jump…
My Morning Jacket, Bon Iver, Jimmy Buffett Acoustic, Zac Brown Band, Trombone Shorty, Bonnie Raitt, Janelle Monae, Rodrigo y Gabriela, GIVERS, Bruce Hornsby, Galactic, Preservation Hall and Friends, and many others will all be featured during the Jazz Fest webcast, which begins today at 2:00 p.m. CDT. Running May 4, 5 and 6, the webcast, powered by Dell and Intel and presented in partnership with YouTube, will stream live music and pre-recorded highlights from the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. Visit www.youtube.com/jazzfest for details and updates.
After the insanely epic Saturday I had down at Jazz Fest, I was unsure of how well my stamina would keep with me at the hot and humid fairground day we had planned to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band close out the weekend on the main stage with a two and a half hour set. Sure enough, the energy of New Orleans took over and me and Jimmy from LMB NOLA raged the day pretty hard in the hot sun. By the time we made it into the bed the next morning, we had see amazing music from Dr. John, Iron and Wine, The Boss himself and some of our favorites in Worship My Organ (Robert Walter, Marco Benevento, Skerik and Adam Deitch). It was a pretty good day front to back. Read on for a few photos and videos I’ve found from the sets that day. Read more…

After a fantastic touch down here in New Orleans last Friday night, I was pretty amped up on adrenaline the next morning in anticipation of getting down to the Jazz Fest fairgrounds. So much of the amazing music of the city gets celebrated every year and the way this part of the festival attracts the older and younger generation is always something I’ve been impressed with. When you approach the fairgrounds through the surrounding neighborhoods, you definitely get a feel for the idea that the entire city sort of lives for this moment. Well wait, not just this moment — they live for tons of moments like these. The entire city seems to participate in some way, shape or form and it’s got a certain feeling that you can’t fully describe. But it always makes me feel good. Read more…
We’ve got another big week of live music in the Big Apple, including some indie rock heavy-hitters like Andrew Bird, The Shins w/ Real Estate, and Feist, along with a three-night indie showcase taking over the stage at Brooklyn Academy of Music, entitled “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry.” Headliners for the three-night extravaganza include The Walkmen, Sharon Von Etten, St. Vincent, The Antlers, Beirut, and Atlas Sound, among a larger cast of characters that’s loosely affiliated with the NYC art-rock scene.
If that’s not your scene, then there’s also Martin Sexton, Woods with Crystal Stilts, some decent dance options in Jersey including Sphongle and Bassnectar, along with two nights of Toubab Krewe at Brooklyn Bowl playing with a bunch of other groove-centric bands. M83′s show tonight is long SOLD OUT but luckily our Colorado crew will be there snappin photos for us. The Black Keys are in town for two nights at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield. In case you’ve been living under a rock or perhaps have missed all of our awesome coverage at LMB NOLA, Jazz Fest has officially begun and gone two days deep into the New Orleans swampy vibes. Today is one of those days that people will be talking about for a while with Bruce Springsteen headlining the fairgrounds with two and a half hours scheduled (with talks about him playing past curfew anyway). Should shape up to be an epic day. But for me, I need to recap where I’ve been so far and catch up a bit on my output over here. It’s a wonder how anyone gets any work done in this town. It’s just too fun. Read more…
Last night in front of a packed house at The Saint Rocke club in Hermosa, California, Greensky Bluegrass continued to put a footprint on bluegrass in 2012. Some have dubbed it newgrass in the same company as the talented Punch Brothers and Cornmeal but I just dub it some damn fine music. The band formed in 2000 in Michigan played a fierce two + hour show, including a 2nd set that had a few head-turning jams. Read more…
