On Saturday night I met a friend and headed to dinner at Coda in anticipation of the set by Skerik and Radioactive dubbed Skerdio. We witnessed some serious music that night, with the show beginning quickly as a showcase of natural musical talent and supplemented electronics to create a full sound worthy of a stage any size. The real highlights came when the masters relied only on natural instinct to create their music, and there’s nothing quite like a saxophone / beatbox duel when it really comes down it. What an amazing show.

We already knew that Trey Anastasio would be inducting Genesis into the Rock’n'Roll Hall of Fame at tonight’s induction ceremony, but according to a feature spot currently on Fuse TV’s website, Phish will actually be performing at the event, and opening the show by covering a number of classic Genesis tunes. OK Go have re-entered the world of internet stardom that they’re used to with the release of the second version of their video for “This Too Shall Pass,” the lead single off their latest album Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky. If you haven’t seen the video yet, it’s an instant classic.
OK Go – This Too Shall Pass – Rube Goldberg Machine version – Official [YouTube]
Right around the time this video started making the rounds, this op-ed piece from Damian Kulash got posted in the NY Times…
“Today, as the record industry’s revenue model has collapsed with the digitization of its biggest commodities, companies are cutting back spending on all but their biggest stars, and not signing nearly as many new acts. If record companies can’t adapt to this new world, they will die out; and without advances, so will the futures of many talented bands.
In these tight times, it’s no surprise that EMI is trying to wring revenue out of everything we make, including our videos. But it needs to recognize the basic mechanics of the Internet. Curbing the viral spread of videos isn’t benefiting the company’s bottom line, or the music it’s there to support. The sooner record companies realize this, the better — though I fear it may already be too late.”
Then the band announced they were splitting with EMI to form their own label called Paracadute. They’re following up the split with a tour and stops at Sasquatch and Bonnaroo along the way. This should be a good year for the band, and hopefully they’ll find their way to the top of their own version of the new music industry model, ala make a viral video, make another one, make two more, then earn your artistic freedom. Not a bad approach by any means… [click to continue…]

Conan O’Brien announced a huge tour yesterday that will bring his lineup from The Tonight Show on the road to just about every major metro in the U.S., including a “headlining” MC slot at Bonnaroo 2010. The tour itself is aptly titled The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour. Check out the info over at teamcoco.com.
This is exactly what I like to see from Conan. Not only did he close out his show with a raucous musical tribute, but now he’s closing out his entire TV history with a trek across the states. I’m pretty sure that he’s laughing internally with the approach. This is clearly his way of throwing up a middle finger to the corporate bureaucracy by perfectly fulfilling on his contract while finding another fruitful avenue for his entertainment. Team Coco FTW.

Yesterday was a big news in the comedy world with Conan O’Brien announcing that he’s taking his former lineup at The Tonight Show — namely himself, Andy Richter, and The Tonight Band with Max Weinberg — all on the road for a huge cross-country tour. Right around the same time I got this news and snagged myself a ticket for one of his dates in San Francisco, the promoters over at Bonnaroo had announced their Comedy Tent headliners for the 2010 festival. Guess who’s at the top of the bill?
The festival will welcome some of the most hilarious personalities working today, including Conan O’Brien, who not only will be performing in the Comedy Theatre, but will also be MCing the What Stage on Friday and Saturday.
Read on for the comedy lineup, which joins an already stellar music lineup announced last month. [click to continue…]

The all-new Nateva Festival has announced a number of additions to its 2010 lineup, including: STS9, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Umphrey’s McGee, Max Creek, John Brown’s Body, The Felice Brothers, Ryan Montbleau Band, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, and Greensky Bluegrass.
Now it’s looking a lot more like a solid substitute for Rothbury.
