Lame

filed under:

From Phish.net...

In an interview on an Atlanta radio station today, Trey (likely in Atlanta for studio work with a producer he's teamed up with before) confirmed rumors that he, Mike, and the Benevento/Russo duo will tour together this summer. Though tickets and billing will likely portray some hierarchy among the bill's acts, rumors (based on previous things Mike and Trey have said) describe the tour as some sort of interactive meld, with each of the 3 doing their own stuff, as well as some interaction among them.

Well, that's all well and good considering that the Duo already confirmed this recently. But here's the lamest kicker I think I've read all year...

Trey also mentioned that he "hopes to get Phish back together in a few years", dispelling rumors of an October 2006 reunion but confirming common suspicions that this "breakup" is really a second hiatus.

I'm working on my "open letter to Trey Anastasio" post right now. Here's a snippet...

"Dear Trey,
Why--oh, why!--do you continue to verbal diarrhea? Phish getting back together? Didn't drugs like bring negativity around? Why are you calling it Phish? Aren't you going to be a nostalgia act if you continue doing these stupid teasers? I'd rather you teased "Meatstick" acoustic in an interview than tell the world that you want to get Phish back together. Oh, and didn't you learn anything from Billy Corgan's crazy-ass announcement before he had all of his ducks in-a-row?"

I think it's a good start.

Trey has turned into a sad shadow of his former self, and this comment is another in a long line that is insulting to anyone who walked miles and miles into Coventry to see the last "last" Phish show. That night I watched my favorite band self-destruct on stage before my very eyes. I don't think I could put myself through it again.

But if it happened, would I be on the phone and online trying to get tickets? You bet I would...

Trey is longing for the days of yore.
And he has every right to do so. As long as the second hiatus is declared officially over with the announcement of a "European

What does anyone care that Trey lied? Is this a courtroom? What does he or anyone else owe anyone? Did he MAKE you follow Phish?
We don't live in Russia people - just chill out

I think Duo + Gordon/Trey would be a great combination. I've been psyched about it ever since I heard about it from the sound guys about a month ago. 10kl baby.

A couple things here...

First and foremost, yes, the Duo with Trey and Gordon is one killer possibility for great music. That much is a given, in my opinion...

Regarding the possibility that Phish would come back or not, I just think that it's lame for Trey to try and continue to fuel the same fire that he used to get away with fueling. Not on my watch...

How many friggin' interviews did he do proclaiming "it was the drugs and not the fact that I'm not into it anymore..." all coming the heels of a terrible album and a lackluster tour (I do understand that we're talking about Trey and that it's all relative regarding his performance or his album or whatever)...

It's Trey trying to sell tickets if you ask me...

And we might as well live in Russia if Trey brings Phish back...this will not be good for their legacy and I'm not the only one that looks at it that way.

He can do whatever the hell he wants, but I'm not going to support his nostalgia tour (to quote his own words). Again.

So just curious, Justin, if Phish comes back on Halloween 2007, are you not attending?

I kinda feel like if you do end up going, you're doing the same thing as Trey. If you don't go, good for you sticking to your guns, but I personally feel like that's cutting of your nose to spite your face.

Trey is a dude who has given us (well, some of us) so much through the years. If he wants to make flippy floppy and equivocate all year long, just tune him out. Nobody's begging you to rip through his remarks like an Alan Greenspan transcript.

I love it when all you boys get your panties in a bunch about Trey. It's so cute.

I don't give a squat about Phish's "legacy." Right now, they're basically a footnote anyway. If they come back together and make good music, I'm all in. If they stay split up and make good music with side projects, that's cool too.

My goal as a music blogger is to pick up on all flippy-floppiness and make sure that everyone else knows it's flippy-floppiness. 'Nuff said...

Phish getting back together? Lame. Didnt they *just* break up...for good?

The last time i saw them in '04 it was boring and uninspired.

Couldn't be further from the truth, Satisfied...listen to the Brooklyn shows, listen to the SPAC Piper or Twist, listen to any single song from NYE 03 in Miami.

Phish's problem in the latter days wasn't "boring and uninspired" music, it was inconsitency. They could still bring it with the best of them, they just didn't put a full show together like they used to, and they didn't put a full run of shows together like they used to. They just didn't have enough time on the road to overcome a lack of practice.

What would solve that? A hiatus opportunity to slim down management and remember what it was like to actually enjoy being together. If they come back, and they start doing 30- or 40-show tours again, they'll be the best band in the nation faster than you can say "veggie burrito, broseph."

on a side note... i saw the second night at tabernacle. i thought it was really good. there was a few bumps, but overall, i was really impressed. i went in with no expectations, and came out feeling great. the line-up is much improved. skeeto was a weak link. trey seemed really happy, and the crowd was alright. i will have to listen to some tapes of both nights, but my first impression was good.

If Mike and Trey are playing with the Duo, what does that say about Fishman and Page about a reunion? Are they the ones against it?

Posted by: BNB614 | April 28, 2006 7:53 PM

And at that level, it's exactly what I'd expect. Both Page and Fishman have (seemingly) been doing what they both want to be doing--sitting at home and enjoying their time away from the *scene*.

Oh who knows, maybe they're all practicing "YEM" right now...oh, the humanity...

I agree with most of what everyone is saying - enough is enough!! Trey should just shut his mouth until he has something worthwhile to say.

He must realize how many phans hang on his every word and it's just BS he keeps spewing such garbage.

I think all most of us want is to listen to Trey play guitar like we know he can, and to write songs that we know he can write - that should be his priority, period, end of story....

Clearly, the intervention has not worked...Trey is still a mess.

Phish is over...you're 'done', remember?...it's in the past...history. If the 4 phenomenal musicians who were Phish decide to play together as a band again, it should be under a new name with totally different songs. Maybe...maybe the occassional Tweezer or Reba (so long as Trey promises not to have any flubs) But, 'Golgi Apparatus' needs to stay retired!

c'mon now....though hardly banging down the door for a Phish reunion, should it happen, I'd jump at the opportunity to catch at least one gig, and I'm guessing that when the times comes, no one commenting on this blog would do differently.

It's just one of those things. If Phish comes, you go, and don't really stop to think about why.

"I love it when all you boys get your panties in a bunch about Trey. It's so cute."

Katie gets comment of the thread for sure.

I remember the 04' shows. I hit two of them. To this day I can't listen to those shows without picking out notes, measures, flubs, and whatever else Trey and the others seemed to be missing. And you know what? They still fucking rocked Alpine. I like what Trey has kept doing since the break, I love what he did before Hiatus I and after, and I'll continue to love what he does until it becomes a Greatest Hits show everytime they hit the stage. So long as they continue to switch it up night after night, all tour long, and don't sound like they've had 8 too many drinks, they'll still be amazing.
