Drop some comments, people!
WHAT WAS THE BEST CONCERT YOU SAW IN 2006 -- and WHY?!?!?
The end of the year is fast approaching and we all know what you're thankful for, but I'm more curious about what your favorite concert was. Also, try to exclude festival sets or anything like that -- that shit don't count...
Umphrey's bringin' in the new year 05 into 06 if that counts!
Festival Sets don't count? Bogus man, that completely takes away my votes for Phil&Friends or Public Property at 10KLF. Other than that:
1) Family Groove Company opening up for Tea Leaf in Urbana on October 5th. Putting that band on a bigger stage really changes their dynamics.
2) Of Montreal in Urbana during March, my first show of theirs. Absolutely incredible.
You need to have to opposite thread in a couple days - Shows You're Pissed You Missed
Radiohead at Theatre at MSG and Flaming Lips at Hammerstein (first night)
Hmm. Saw a lot of pretty awesome shows this year.
Death Cab in Norfolk definitely tops my list, with Belle & Sebastian and Of Montreal in NYC being tied for 2nd. The Of Montreal show was pretty poorly mixed, although it's hard to beat the atmosphere of McCarren Park Pool.
The Boss at JazzFest.
Here's a nice video of Bruce at JazzFest.
The Disco Biscuits in Chicago -- and not when they opened for moe.!
Brain Damaged Eggmen on the Jam Cruise. Unfreakinbelievable!
hmm... its a big tossup. im going to go with steve kimmock band at variety playhouse in atlanta, and bill frissell trio at bottletree in birmingham. ive seen a bunch of shows this year, but those were just tops. 2 incredible musicians and their bands, in rare form.
Jurassic 5 and STS9 at Red Rocks. I was second row center for the show (Thanks Amy) and J5 was so happy to be playing in front of 9,000+. The world needs more socially conscious positive hip-hop.
Wow, there were a lot of concerts I've been to this year, but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers w/ The Strokes in Gainesville, FL was one of the best shows I've been to since the Foo Fighters and Chili Peppers tour in 2000.
Absolutely amazing...and great seats. Gainesville knows how to show their legend some thanks and the atmosphere proved it.
I'd say either Ben Harper in Chicago, or the moe. run last weekend at the Chicago Theatre.
Easily the "Bustle In Your Hedgerow" show at the Abbey Pub in Chicago. Great venue, great crowd and great energy after a long Lollapolloza weekend!
-MMJ @ Rites of Spring, Nashville: barely a festival, more like an outdoor show- beautiful weather, Jim James, and Vandy girls.
-WSP in Lexington: first time seeing Herring w/ Panic was epic (plus Dirty Dozen- ohhh man! very dirty)
-N.M. All Stars- saw em 3 times each time they keep getting more amazing
The best is yet to come 3 nigts of MMJ this week followed by 3 nights of Ryan Adams and the Cardinals next week.
But so far
MMJ with Boston Pops is one I will remember forever.
Beck acoustic at Angel Orenza Center for the Arts.
Ryan Adams in Charolettesville
Man Man at the Cake Shop
Akron/Family at Knitting Factory
Tom Ptty at MSG
Secret Machines at the Hiro Ballroom
U-Melt/Tea Leaf Green at the Knitting Factory
Licorice/The States at Sine
hmm this is a great question...but there were too many awesome shows so I'm gonna put my top 5 (in chronological order)
-Phil and Friends + G.R.A.B. @ Jones Beach 7/7
-Flaming Lips @ The Hammerstein 9/25 (9/24 was sold out by the time i was trying to get tickets!)
-Trey @ Webster Hall 10/9
-Medeski Martin & Wood @ The Hammerstein - Halloween!!
-Disco Biscuits @ The Hammerstein 11.24
Dave Matthews, Summer Tour, East Troy, Saturday Night, holy lord....cliche, but so f'n awesome, also Mars Volta @ the Rave Sept. 23rd. Those two shows were unbearably awesome, Dave Matthews has the edge tho however on this matter. Wilco @ Summerfest is also highly mentionable
The Hold Steady at the Metro
Girl Talk at The Empty Bottle
Magic Numbers at the Double Door
The Ark at Schubas
Tom Waits, Akron, Ohio
That man is a genius.
Naked Raygun- Secret show at The Cobra Lounge a couple months ago. Fantastic old school Chicago punk rock at it's finest. The show a few weeks later at Subterranean couldn't touch it. It was clearly one of "those" nights.
Acoustic Planet Tour at Chastain in Atlanta. Adrian Belew, Umphrey's McGee, and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones all sitting in with each other. Belew playing "Red" with UM + UM jamming "Stomping Grounds" with the 'Tones = change of pants.
Phil 6/30/06
It made being in Camden worthwhile.
Umphrey's McGee @ The Electric Factory (May)
Gov't Mule @ The Bowery Ballroom (H&M release party)
Gov't Mule @ The Commodore Ballroom (2nd night)
All 3 were equally amazing, I think. It's hard to pick :)
Radiohead at the Greek Theater in Berkeley
I was blown away by them at the 20,000 capacity Shoreline Ampitheater in 2000. The Greek is about 5 or 6K -- unbelievably powerful concert in the East Bay fog.
Best show I saw all year had to be my first show of the year. Seeing the Broken Social Scene at Webster Hall in NYC on 1/27/06. Talk about an amazing night of music.
Close Runners-Up:
Stereolab at the TLA in Philly (March)
The Walkmen at the Mohawk Place in Buffalo (January)
Built to Spill at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo (Sept)
Zero 7 with Jose Gonzalez at Webster Hall (Sept)
What a great year for live music!
David Bazan. In July, his show at the Casbah in San Diego was great. Four months later, his show at the smaller, The EARL, in Atlanta, was even better.
Hi people
I do not know what to give for Christmas of the to friends, advise something ....
Nobody has mentioned Trey, Mike and the Duo at 10KLF yet? Rediculous. Best show by far... thank you Justin for sending me...
1. Dave Matthews Band at Randals Island- August 5th- great guest appearances by Warren Haynes and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
2. Disco Biscuits at Hammerstein- November 25th. Excellent show highlighted by Echoes.
I immediately thought of Phil at 10K....and then saw that someone else agreed, as it was the first post.....it WAS at a festival, but it was also 2 full sets. And Phil dropped the bombs harder than I've seen him in years.
