Grammys '08 Open Thread

Kanye West "Stronger" (with Daft Punk) [YouTube]

Amy Winehouse - Know Good / Rehab [YouTube]

The 2008 Grammys wrapped-up last night with a couple standout performances, including Kanye West's Daft Punk mashup, the Foo Fighters token orchestral rock performance, and Amy Winehouse's hyped-up end of show performance of "Know Good" -> "Rehab." Most of the rest was 100% ho-hum to me. What did you guys think of the "fakeness?"

I thought the Rhapsody in Blue performance was the only part worth watching. Congrats to Herbie Handcock on being the first jazz musician since 1964 to win Album of the Year. Here's an interesting quote from a CNN article:

"In fact, in the history of the Grammys, only one pure jazz album -- Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto's 1964 "Getz/Gilberto" -- has won the big prize, one less than the number of comedy albums that has done so."

I really liked the Daft Punk/Kanye video. As far as I'm aware, it's the first time anyone has ever seen their interface being used. Prior, I had only seen those still pictures from inside the pyramid. Granted, it wasn't the real deal that they use on tour, but it was still pretty damned awesome. I was thankful for the Tivo to be able to go back and watch that repeatedly.

And I too really dug the Herbie Hancock part.

Other than that, super-meh.

I was amazed to see Kayne perform live having just seen him at the 'Good Vibrations' festival in Melbourne, Australia Saturday night.

The Grammy's? Frankly who cares about a hyped industry event.

kanye was amazing! but i was so freakin pissed about Amy Winehouse for winning so many awards. Shes a drug addict and she sings like a man. I hate her music and i hate everything she is about.

Sure it was hyped, and sure I usually feel that this has nothing to do with music and the side of the industry that I care about, but there were something about the performances that I did feel stood out.

Regarding Amy Winehouse, I'm starting to wonder if we're a little too hard on artists for struggling with a problem while also finding inspiration to write music that inspires and touches millions. I was super hard on Trey Anastasio in his recent troubles but I'm not sure it's always warranted.
