Jake Cinninger (Umphrey’s McGee): What is your favorite performance from the past twelve months?
Secret Machines, Bonnaroo 2005
Yep, one of mine, too. You might remember that I just recently podcasted the whole set–check out parts one, two and three here. Enjoy.
Mike Gordon (Phish): Name one band you discovered (or rediscovered) in the past year?
I saw Toubab Krewe at a late night set at Bonnaroo and, then again, at Nectar’s in Burlington. I really like African music. Also, in Burlington, they had a djembe player sitting in with them from Africa—he was incredible.
Toubab Krewe is on my “Bands I Discovered Early 2006″ list and they’re going to stay pretty close to the top.
Gabby La La: What will you remember most about 2005?
All of the amazing and new experiences I encountered! Wow, I never realized how many unicorns there were in the United States!
Uhm, WTF. What a weirdo…but I dig hate dig that…
Which ones related to you?
I was the chap who interviewed Gordo for that bit and his response surprised me–which is why I love the guy.
I related to this number:
Howie Schnee (Creative Entertainment Group) -
What is your favorite performance from the past twelve months?
Mars Volta at Bonnaroo. Epic!
Close runner-up is the 2nd night of Trey in
May at Hammerstein. The “Wolfman’s Brother” with Gordon was the best thing I
saw in concert all year.
I caught the Volta and I’ve already talked about that a bit too much. In summary: two reactions: facemelting (SHAYZUSCRIST, THEY RAWKK!) OR horror (RUN AWAY! RUNAWAY!)
I didn’t catch the Trey/Cactus/Hammerstein show as we are currently coastally challenged. I would replace that gig with Trey at the Warfield on 12/03 where he reminded 2,200 people why they got obsessed with him in the first place–witty off-the-cuff banter, balls, killer guitar, smokin’ improv, horns and flutes and a wonderful sense of dynamic humanity. I completely credit myself, of course, because he gave me a huge hug before the gig and I pilfered his wallet which eased his weighty burden. ;-)
He really connected with the crowd. “Simple Twist Up Dave” was my favorite bit of tasty jam on my ‘05 sandwich.
Yeah, man, thanks for the head’s up on Toubab Krewe. Those guys are super.
