Happy Monday morning, dudes. I thought I’d start the week with a roundup of the Phish setlists that were thrown down this weekend:

November 22, 2009
Syracuse War Memorial
Syracuse, NY

Set 1: David Bowie, Julius, Sparkle, Kill Devil Falls, Lawn Boy, Heavy Things, Funky Bitch, Sample In A Jar, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Let Me Lie, Beauty of a Broken Heart, Stash
Set 2: Drowned > Twist, Piper > Big Black Furry Creatures From Mars, Tube, Theme From The Bottom, Maze, The Horse > Silent In The Morning, Character Zero, First Tube
Encore: Good Times Bad Times

November 21, 2009
U.S. Bank Arena
Cincinnati, OH

Set 1: Wilson, NICU, Wolfman’s Brother, Ocelot, Torn and Frayed, Strange Design, Ginseng Sullivan, Albuquerque, Split Open and Melt, Dirt, Limb by Limb, Run Like An Antelope
Set 2: Rock and Roll > Ghost, If I Could, Backwards Down The Number Line, Prince Caspian, Suzy Greenberg, 2001, Squirming Coil
E: Sleeping Monkey, Axilla I

November 20, 2009
U.S. Bank Arena
Cincinnati, OH

Set 1: Chalkdust Torture, The Moma Dance, The Divided Sky, Alaska, Water in the Sky, Fast Enough For You, Time Turns Elastic, Gotta Jibboo, Fluffhead
Set 2: Punch You In The Eye, Tweezer -> Light > Back On The Train -> Possum, Slave to the Traffic Light, You Enjoy Myself
Encore: Joy, Golgi Apparatus > Tweezer Reprise

[setlists via Hidden Track]

Not too surprising for the Phish 3.0 that we all know and love, it seems that every night that the tour progresses we get to see our favorite band stretch out a bit on stage and play more comfortably with experimenting and improvising. Every set that they played at Festival 8 seemed to build on the one previous, and the tour so far looks to have that same progression. “David Bowie” opener last night? THAT’S what I’m talking about…

Like New Year’s Eve, Halloween is another holiday that a lot of bands choose to celebrate in style. There’s just something about mixing the live concert experience with all the fun and choas of Halloween that really brings out the freaks. While most bands typically play into the Halloween vibe in some way, touring bands often approach Halloween as an opportunity to really create a unique live music event. Just as we did with our New Year’s Eve concert round-up, we’ve compiled a list of Halloween concerts that will be going on this weekend (see below for the long list).

We have also noticed a few bands that are taking a similar approach to Halloween as Phish by doing some sort of “musical costume” and either covering another band’s music or playing a full show of thematic covers. Here are a few of the more interesting “musical costumes” we’ve seen announced this year:

1) Phish Festival 8 @ Empire Polo Club, Indio, CA: Festival 8 Musical Costume TBD
Although we’ve been covering this since it was announced, we still had to include it here. As Phish has done for past Halloween shows, they will cover a classic album in its entirety at their upcoming three-day Halloween extravaganza out in Indio, CA. However, this time around they’ve been giving fans a preview of all the possible cover selections over at Phish.com. At the time of this posting, the current contenders include: 1) David Bowie – Hunky Dory 2) David Bowie – Ziggy Stardust 3) Frank Zappa – Apostrophe 4) Genesis – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 5) Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland 6) King Crimson – Larks’ Tongues In Aspic 7) Led Zeppelin – Zeppelin I 8) MGMT – Oracular Spectacular 9) Michael Jackson – Thriller 10) Pink Floyd – The Wall 11) Prince – Purple Rain 12) Radiohead – Kid A 13) Rolling Stones – Exile on Main Street 14) Van Morrison – Astral Weeks)

For an up-to-date list of the possible cover albums, head on over to Jamtopia where they’re keeping track of the daily changes.

2) Lotus w/ Big In Japan & The Egg @ Sonar Main Stage, Baltimore, MD: “Protein Pills in the Labyrinth”
Lotus is doing Halloween at Sonar and has billed the event as “Protein Pills in the Labyrinth.” Although the band originally meant to keep the actual theme of the show a secret, Billboard recently did a feature on them and accidentally let the news slip…the event will feature the music of David Bowie (and we can only assume it will be all-instrumental, per the band’s standard approach)

3) Deer Tick w/ special guest TBA @ Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn, NY: The Music of the Sex Pistols
Deer Tick will be taking on the music of the Sex Pistols at their Halloween show at Brooklyn Bowl. The show will also include a special guest (still TBA) covering the music of Sonic Youth. Admission will be $5 or free with a Halloween costume!
(via Hidden Track)

4) Leroy Justice featuring Scott Metzger @ The Bitter End, New York, NY: The Music of Steve Miller Band
Scott Metzger will sit in with Leroy Justice at Manhattan’s Bitter End for two sets of music that will include a cover of Steve Miller Band’s Greatest Hits and some originals.

Updated on Wed, Nov. 4

For live/touring bands, New Year’s Eve is a key night of the year to really bring out the big guns and party down with hardcore fans. As such, we tend to see lots of bands playing bigger shows to hometown crowds, often mixing in some fun/silly covers and party-time antics, or generally getting a bit crazy for the NYE celebrations. For fans, it’s a great time to catch your favorite band and let it all out in one big end-of-the-year catharsis.

We’ve started to see a number of bands announce plans for their New Year’s Eve celebrations — and in some cases, a multi-night run of shows — so I thought I’d compile a roundup of some NYE shows that were recently announced. Although this isn’t really meant to be a comprehensive list, definitely let us know if you think we’re missing any noteworthy NYE celebrations.

<del datetime="2009-11-04T20:04:14+00:00">Since it’s only the end of September, many bands are still putting together their plans for NYE. There are a number of big touring bands that usually celebrate NYE in style but have yet to announce their end-of-year plans (Phish, </del><del datetime="2009-09-25T22:18:52+00:00">Widespread Panic,</del> moe., My Morning Jacket, Medeski, Martin & Wood, just to name a few).

According to Jambands.com, moe. will be taking NYE off.

We’ll keep an eye out for new announcements, but if you think we overlooked a good one, drop us a note/link in the comments.

So what show are you hitting on NYE?

I’ve been totally out of loop since moving into a new apartment, but now that I’m settled in and mostly unpacked I’ll have some more time to devote to this here website. Sorry for the lack of updates from my side. I always apologize, I know — and that really doesn’t do much, I know — but just understand that I have really been trying hard to keep up as the site is still something I very much love to do and I love that people still come hang out with us online.

Here’s a bunch of other stuff that was going on while we weren’t posting too many articles.

Marco Benevento is being joined by Reed Mathis and Jon Fishman (!) for four dates in the Northeast in early November. That, my friends, is insane. Someone remind me to download those shows. [Hidden Track]

Ryan posted the latest Live Music Podcast, an Arcade Fire set from Vegoose 2005. [The Live Music Podcast]

Built to Spill covered “Paper Planes” live in Italy and it sounds really amazing. Anyone know where to find a full version? [Stereogum]

LL Cool J just played House of Blues in Chicago and liveDaily was there to take photos. I wonder if it was any good. [liveDaily]

Ticketmaster just bought a talent agency. I thought that was the only thing they did not have power over already, the talent side of the equation. [liveDaily]

More good stuff to come, folks. I missed you guys.

Summer is definitely wrapping up here at LMB and we’ve got a lot of stuff to get posted! We’ve all seen a tremendous amount of music! And there’s plenty more to come! Yay!

Okay, so maybe this past week was a little slow around here. Sigh.

But, “Justin,” you say, “Phish did reunite for three songs at their friends’ wedding. That’s pretty gnarly, brosef.” And I completely agree with you. I know they’ve been throwing the rumors around for a while and they just have to know that this is turning their fans crazy. Crazier. Again. I really think we’re going to keep feeling this buildup until they actual announce a tour, which supposedly will be sometime during 2009. I can’t wait.

Trust me when I say that we’ve got a bunch of cool stuff to get posted. Also, we’ve got something good planned for this week’s Phish Friday so make sure you stop by for that later in the week. For now here’s our headlines from last week:

This weekend I spent Saturday and Sunday in the photo pit for the Slow Food Rocks music festival, an inaugural event at Fort Mason here in San Francisco set atop a hill overlooking Golden Gate Bridge and the mouth of the Bay. What a view. The festival went off without a hitch at all to be found, and both days featured an eclectic mix of music and food vendors and it was a great, relaxing way to spend the weekend. I chose an extra day off from the blog, too. So just think of yesterday as my blog “labor” day. Hopefully the rest of you slackers found quality time to chillax, also.

We’ve got some great updates lined up for the week and we hope to have a podcast or two to share this weekend — we’ve been way too quiet in that department — so stay tuned to the site and check out our headlines from last week in case you missed them.

Yesterday was the third and final day of the inaugural Outside Lands music festival, and there were a lot of mixed reviews on how well the event went for those in attendance. Personally, I had a lot of fun and I felt that I got to see most everything I wanted to see on all three days. The question on whether or not I enjoyed everything I saw on Friday would be questionable, but only because the promoters seemed to put Beck on the wrong stage resulting in logistical issues and a host of agitated festival patrons. Other than that, I seriously loved every second of the fest, and I hope to see it return sometime next year.

More updates will be coming from me and sure to be coming from the Coventry and Hidden Track folks, who I got to meet up with and chat with while the festival was happening. Great great times.
Read on for a roundup of our posts from last week and stay tuned for tons more updates this week.

The Octopus Project ala iPhone | Photo © Justin Ward

Holy cow. I swore to myself that more posts would be up on this here blog today, but the rather spiraly turn of events that would otherwise be referred to as “my day” got a bit out of hand and I’m just now settling down from it all. I don’t even really know what that means either.

SO YEAH, it’s time to round up the week and re-post the headlines from what we got posted on the site last week, all while I build a solid round of anticipation for a couple cool things I plan on getting posted over the next couple days. First, we’ve got Paul’s coverage from All Points West finally wrapped up and settled, and his photos look absolutely incredible. Second, yet another round of tour dates are flooding our inbox and we plan on dropping a couple posts highlighting our favorites. And finally, I’ll be putting up some reviews from the shows I saw this weekend (The Octopus Project and Benevento/Russo Duo). Oh yeah, Outside Lands starts this Friday, too. Man it’s a good time to be alive…

Lots more coming from us this week, so read on for the headlines and check back in early tomorrow (today) for some more updates from the crew. Holla.
