Rolling Stone has the exclusive on the return to from a band I’ve always loved a ton: Luscious Jackson. They recently started tweeting that they were putting together new music and RS has the new track called, “Are You Ready?” In the interview they mention that they will indeed return to do some shows at some point, but not until they finish a full album worth of material and rehearse some of their old stuff. Trey Anastasio Band has been leaking out a steady stream of new music on this tour, so I thought I’d drop the setlist and find some videos of the debuts to hear how the new stuff sounds. YouTube comments like “Super adult contemporary, but it’s pretty. Thanks for uppin.” don’t leave me with a whole lot of hope that everything is going to be blow me away on first listen, but that’s Trey pushing ahead with new music like he’s always done. I’ll leave any judgement to after I’ve gotten a chance to dig in and listen to some of the new tunes to see what may make the rotation in the setlists of Phish 2012 (light touring year! omfg freaking out!). Radiohead played the first of two nights at Roseland Ballroom last night in New York City, and by most accounts the show was an overwhelming triumph of all things they do best in a live setting. The band opened with “Bloom” …
Wow, that’s the good stuff. Man I really wish I was there…
“The show opened as “The King of Limbs” does, with “Bloom,” a reverie propelled by something like refracted samba rhythm. Philip Selway, Radiohead’s regular drummer, worked busily but stoically — and so did a second drummer, Clive Deamer, hammering at a bank of electronic pads. Lending a third pair of hands on percussion was the band’s lead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood, momentarily hunched over a snare drum and floor tom. The bassist Colin Greenwood served as a movable anchor, shifting the emphasis bar by bar.” [NY Times]
There was a bust-out from 2003 in “Subterranean Homesick Alien,” which was last played at Red Rocks and got some serious attention by playing it relatively early in the night. There were also two drummers on stage all night with Clive Deamer joining the band as he had on their recent Saturday Night Live and The Colbert Report performances. All the blogs are raving about it.

In case you missed it, we had posted quite a bit of coverage from this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival. It was my first time down there and I ran a full set of galleries from all the amazing artists I got the privledge to shoot, and our very own Wesley Hodges took the reigns for Live Music Blog: NOLA and wrote some amazing recaps from each day of the festival. Check all that out here.
In case you thought that it stopped there, we’ve probably got at least one more gallery / recap coming with all of our coverage put together in a nice pile and we’ve got to start paying attention to lineup clues for next year now that the early-bird tickets for ACL Fest 2012 are going on sale tomorrow to anyone of the festival’s newsletter subscribers. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s too late to get in on the $185 tickets tomorrow. After that, a three-day pass is going to cost you about $200 (at least). Get on it, son! READ MORE
Last night the Fourmile Canyon Revival went down and featured six hours of amazing music while raising over $300,000 for the benefit of the victims of the Fourmile Canyon Fire, the worst disaster in Colorado’s state history. It’s a devastating story that fire, but last night went far to revive the spirit of community within the region while getting everyone amped for the three-night Phish run that’s about to go down at the same venue. The reviews I’ve read make the show sound like a really solid live event that went off without a hitch. READ MORE
This weekend was a weird and somewhat disappointing one for live music news (that is, unless you’re a String Cheese Incident fan — more on that shortly). The tragedy being what it is following Love Parade in Germany, I’d hate to highlight something so devastating when there’s perhaps a more useful, half-hearted set of headlines that can be shared to end the day on a better note. And while they can be taken lightly, it had me thinking more seriously about the role of live music in our lives and how sometimes our expectations aren’t really in line with what the artist is trying to accomplish. Are there times and circumstances when a band or thing gets too big and gets detached? Too hyped? Too misunderstood or too jarring for a populace that seems to wish they had it a certain way? How do our concert expectations get fulfilled and do some artists just go well out of their way to satisfy their own needs at the expense of the audience’s potential reaction?
Maybe those are a seemingly random mix of questions, but they seemed to flow together when I sat down to write a post on the news following the Kings of Leon show this past Friday night. I had also just read about M.I.A.’s performance this weekend and finally caught up with the Panda Bear photos and review over at You Ain’t No Picasso. Do these artists suck at concerts?READ MORE
