A few weeks back, I caught one of my favorite Medeski, Martin & Wood shows I’ve seen to date. These guys seem to be a point in their career where they can do no wrong, and the show I saw definitely did not disappoint. So I thought I’d ask a friendly taper if we could use his source of the show for our next podcast and he happily complied with the ask, so hopefully this little podcast mix will help you groove your way through your Sunday. I threw the tracks together using my new “DJ” setup and it’s the first of many more mixes to come from me. Think of it as a dubbed out version of the memories I came away with from the show. Enjoy!

Phew. I’ve had one crazy summer! My sincere apologies for the radio silence. Moving to a big city will do that to a guy. For those that don’t know, I’m now officially a resident of Brooklyn and I couldn’t be more excited. Although there are ton of reasons to get excited about living in NYC, one of the great parts of my new spot is the sudden expansion of my concert calendar. Earlier today, I did a quick perusal of my options this Fall and was in shock at all the possibilities. Admittedly, free time, finances, and a need for sleep will certainly be getting in the way of those possibilities, but for the most part, I’m basically a kid in a fuckin’ candy store of rock’n'roll. Hooray NYC live music!

While I’m already looking ahead to the Fall concert calendar (and liking what I’m seeing), I can’t quite move on without a little reflection on my summer. Although things were nuttier than hell for me, I still managed to hit some good shows, including four Phish concerts when all was said and done. From all that I witnessed in person — along with a heavy bout of listening sessions — I generally liked what I heard. I think the band hit some serious high notes along the way, including some killer improvisation.

As a result, I thought the best way to get back into the live music blogging world was with one my favorite LMB past-times: creating new Live Music Blog podcasts. So in honor of Phish’s triumphant return to the summer stage –- and to me being lucky enough to enjoy much of it in person — I’ve pieced together a DJ-style mix of what I consider to be some of the band’s best improvisational moments from their 2009 summer shows. As with previous mixes, I’ve cut right to the “meat” of the improv by splicing together only the jam sections and leaving out the vocal and main song segments.

There was some pretty top-notch jamming this summer, so this one clocks in at just over an hour. Although I think I’ve covered the key highlights, I am sure there are still plenty of other gems out there that I missed. So if I somehow neglected your favorite jam segment of the summer, I apologize. There was a lot of material to sift through! Either way, take a listen and make sure to drop us a comment with your impressions or share your personal favorite jams from the summer tour. Most of all, enjoy!

Back in December, I was lucky enough to catch a reunited Brothers Past play a killer NYE show outside of Philly. With their original drummer, Rick Lowenberg, back in the mix, BP reminded me why I became such a fan of their unique brand of live electronic dance music.

As I’ve been getting back into working out and running a bit more frequently, I realized I was low on new workout tunes to get me motivated. As a result, I decided to put together another version of our Hippie Workout Mix, this time with a focus on the badass beats of Brothers Past.

BP’s precise drum and bass beats and layered polyrhythms give this mix an extra kick in terms of intensity. In fact, on my test runs with this thing, it was often pretty difficult to keep up. I have no doubt it’ll get you moving.

Enjoy:

With all the excitement of the recent announcement of Phish’s reunion, it may seem a bit odd that our Phish Friday posts have calmed down a bit here on the site. Although Justin and I have definitely been a bit nuts in our day jobs, to be frank, we have also gotten a bit burnt out on it doing Phish Friday posts. A few weeks ago, we basically hit a wall and decided that there was so much good stuff going on out there that we didn’t feel like we could keep up. Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts has been rocking out great compilations, the Coventry blog is collectively kicking some butt, and Scotty B’s HT Phish spin-off, You Enjoy MyBlog is tracking all things web and Phish. Considering this blog was founded back in ‘04 basically after Justin’s post-Phish show epiphany that “nobody was blogging about Phish,” it is honestly great to see other sites really taking this on in full swing and digging in to the band’s long history of amazing live shows.

Although our Phish Friday posts may be a bit less frequent these days, we are certainly not calling it quits. With that in mind, I decided to mix together two of my favorite types of posts — Phish Fridays and Podcasts — and piece together a new version of our Hippie Workout Mix with some of my favorite moments of Phish improv, spliced together with a nice, mellow workout in mind. Believe it or not, a while back I used to run to this band’s music all the time. There is something about a perfect Phish jam and a good run that works really well together; call it zen or something. But whether you’re really up for that long workout or just want a really killer DJ-style Phish mix, this should definitely suit your needs.

Enjoy:

Be sure to include both song name and show date. Here’s a hint…there are exactly eight tracks.</del> I just got a little reminder that I never posted the full tracklist. Here it is:

4/2/98 Punch You in the Eye >
7/29/98 Bathtub Gin >
12/30/97 AC/DC Bag >
12/31/99 Down with Disease >
7/10/99 Chalkdust Torture
7/30/97 > Cities (from Bowie > Cities > Bowie)
4/3/98 Weekapaug Groove >
7/10/99 Bathtub Gin

Editor’s note: in my haste in switching over the site to WordPress I forgot to make sure our podcast feed was rigged up correctly. I’m working on fixing it, but in the meantime you can come and stream the podcast on the site using the built in music player on the site. We’ve got a special guest podcast for our return to form (yet again) and we’re seriously would not want to miss a chance to spread a good message and some good tunes with a podcast following up the Vice Presidential debate. The title of the podcast says it all. Take it away, Ryan…

Hello Live Music Blog.com listeners and readers, this is Ryan Pedersen, Editor of livemusicpodcast.net and your guest host for Podcast #062. Justin and I have collaborated to bring you a special podcast to raise awareness of an issue that is very important to us. Voter registration deadlines are fastly approaching in many states with some as early as October 4th. Even if you are not planning on voting we still strongly encourage you to register anyway, especially if you make the decision to vote when it’s too late.

The fact is that you really have nothing to lose by registering and the process is very quick and requires little effort. A great place to start is by going to non-partisan websites RocktheVote.com or HeadCount.org to begin the registration process or to check the voter registration deadlines in your state.

To help drive home the importance of voting I will be playing a compilation of politically charged audience recordings that were downloaded via archive.org and bt.etree.org. All of the artists that will be featured have open taping policies so we encourage you to download the rest of the concerts using the links provided. A big thanks go out to these bands for their open policies and the tapers, which without their efforts this show would not be possible. Please enjoy the music and if you haven’t already done so get registered to vote today!!

A while back, I put together a little workout mix of some high-energy improv by the Disco Biscuits and added a tongue-in-cheek name just to have some fun. Although we knew it was a decent mix, Justin and I have been surprised at the warm reception we’ve gotten from it.

As a result, we’re back with another version of the “Hippie Workout Mix.” Per your recommendations we’ve lengthened this version substantially. Beyond that, we definitely stuck with the original theme: splicing together moments of high-energy improv to get you off your butt and really moving.

For future mixes, we’ll definitely be featuring other bands, but I just had too many solid picks leftover from the first mix to pass up doing a second version with music by the Disco Biscuits.

Enjoy and don’t forget to stretch!

Even though it’s been quite a while since we’ve done a podcast here for the site, I really don’t feel any deep need to explain why we’ve been so silent in this category. The only thing I’m really compelled to add is that you can expect a lot more podcasts from us in the very near future. I’m realizing that we’re sitting on treasure troves of great live tunes that have never really been featured as part of the site. That is no more, my friends.

For my return to the podcasting arena, enjoy this solid run from a band I’ve been getting into over the past couple months. I got deeply emotionally attached to Panda Bear Person Pitch, an album that Pitchfork named as the top album of 2007. It was only fitting that I reached back into the archives a bit to see what he was doing before releasing one of my favorite albums ever made. That “before” was and still is Animal Collective, a scream-filled trip through noise and psychedelic with a little bit of jungle techno thrown in for good measure. This shit is wild.

Show notes: Animal Collective @ Webster Hall, NYC 9/30/07 (source)
Total running time: 24:01

It’s funny that I was sitting on this recording for so long. Once I saw it posted on nyctaper, I sent him a note and asked him if he was cool with us using this recording for a podcast. He kindly approved. But then I just didn’t post it. It was only after I saw this recent “Brother Sport” clip on Stereogum that it finally felt right. It felt like a nice symbiosis in my life.

At any rate, I think these guys are crazy good and I’m psyched to see them booked for Coachella, All Points West, and Pitchfork Music Fest. As long as they keep booking festivals and keep playing stuff like this, and I’m definitely down.

Hope you guys enjoy.

As we’re getting closer to the Spring season, I am trying to focus on getting back in better shape for soccer season. As a result, I’ve been piecing together some tracks from the archives, specifically creating mixes geared towards my workouts.

I know I’m not the only one who listens to a lot of live music for exercising purposes. I bet lots of you have those choice tracks that include just the right amount of live concert energy to push you a bit further, lift a little more weight, or go that much faster. That raw energy of the concert experience can really do wonders for a workout.

With that in mind, I bring you the first in a podcast series known as Hippie Workout Mix. I’ve subtitled Volume 1 “Triumphant Bisco,” as I’ve spliced together a bunch of seriously energizing tracks by the Disco Biscuits.

Although the name is tongue-in-cheek, the musical motivation from these cuts is definitely no joke. Enjoy…

I meet a lot of live music fanatics whose only exposure to Steve Kimock is his occasional affiliations with former members of the Grateful Dead in the late 90’s (Kimock played on the Further Tour with the Other Ones and occasionally with Phil Lesh and Friends). Other folks have seen various reincarnations of the Steve Kimock Band and maybe even seen his recent reunion shows with his old Bay Area band, Zero. But a lot of folks don’t know that Steve Kimock once had a near-perfect band: KVHW. Kimock, Vega, Hurtz, and White, was a two-year Kimock project from 1998 – 1999, involving bassist Bobby Vega, drummer Alan Hertz (now part of Garaj Mahal), and rhythm guitarist and ex-Zappa vocalist, Ray White.

While I am a pretty big Kimock fan in general, the reason that this project sticks out most is because of the other members of this band. In particular, it is the inclusion of the tastefully funky bassist, Bobby Vega, that allowed KVHW to bring out a distinctly funky and bluesy side of Kimock. It is a side to his playing that you might not ever hear as a part of a Grateful Dead side project or even in his later playing in any variations of the Steve Kimock Band. It’s funky, bluesy, soulful rock jamming at Kimock’s finest.

For our 58th podcast, I’ve pieced together some highlights from two nights of KVHW at the Wetlands, which basically was the unofficial ‘jamband HQ’ in New York City until it closed in September 2001. These two nights capture KVHW at its peak as a fresh, energetic, and exploratory improvisational rock band made up of four amazing musicians. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do…
