Post image for Podcast #071: Hippie Workout Mix, Vol. 5 – BP BPMs

It’s been way too long since I posted a full-fledged Hippie , so what better day to post a new one than on the day of the NYC Marathon.

For Volume 5 in our Hippie Workout Mix series, I decided to go back to an old stand-by for workout tunes: . BP’s live shows always provide an intensity that’s just perfect for these mixes. Although they’ve only been gradually ramping up their touring schedule since reuniting a coupe years back, the limited shows they have played have been stellar. Here’s hoping they can expand to a denser touring schedule in 2012, because more people need to get a taste for this stuff in the live setting. Speaking of which, they just announced a decent-sized East Coast New Year’s run. READ MORE

In celebration of kicking off their summer tour this weekend, it’s time for another podcast.

Although I certainly love the band’s darker side, for me, I generally equate Phish and summer with the band’s blissful and happy improvisational style. With that in mind, I decided to mimic the same theme from my last podcast — the Bisco Bliss Mix — and splice together some of my favorite moments of “blissful” Phish improv.

Happy Summer Tour 2011. Enjoy!

#070, the Phish Summertime .

Since I recently started posting again, it was only a matter of time before I had to post a new podcast. Although I definitely have some newer mixes in the works, I decided to finally put the finishing touches on a older mix that has literally been years in the making: my “Bisco Bliss” mix.

I think I originally started putting some tracks into a “starter playlist” back in late 2007 or early 2008. Then I completely forgot about it until recently rediscovering the playlist while re-vamping my music libe. Rather than selfishly continue to hang onto it for my own ears, I decided it was finally time to complete the original idea as a full-fledged podcast.

So, I present to you #069, the Bisco . READ MORE

Phish finished up their summer tour last night at Jones Beach on Long Island, NY, and by now you’ve likely heard about the guy falling (jumping?) from the balcony during the setbreak. Hidden Track has the full report. I felt ill for the people that would have been around that and seen it happen (or any part of the aftermath); what a horrific sight. Let’s hope the guy is on the mend, and let’s kindly ask him to never come to a show again. Kthxbai.

Moving right along, in between listening to the amazing sounding streams coming out of the last two nights (thanks taper420!), I’ve also been listening through the three shows that I saw back when the band was in town for the Greek Theater run. Even though the last run of shows have been clearly the stronger musical moments of the summer for the band, I’m still partial to the three nights in Berkeley. Sure, Alpine night one may have been musically stronger and Telluride may have been a bit more epic in terms of historic natural surroundings, but the shows that I’m going to remember and care about most were the ones that consumed my three days a few weeks back. I gave some thoughts on each night briefly but couldn’t expand much further without gushing completely fanboy all over the blog, not that I should fight that urge, but I really wanted to wrap up the run a bit differently this time.

That brings us nicely to a return of something we don’t spend nearly enough time on anymore — Podcasts! It’s almost a lost art-form for us at this point and at one time we feared that podcasts are not the ideal form of media consumption for a lot of our readers. That said, it’s a great way for us to put something together for our audience that requires little effort on your part. Just hit play below and listen to my favorite 75 minutes from the entire run, and follow along to read my thoughts on each of the jams. That’s easy listening. That should make anybody happy. Or subscribe in iTunes and get every mix we make sent directly to your media library; that works, too!

Kill Devil Falls (8.5.10) – Some people may balk at this selection, but this was the moment that I locked into the band as they were playing and really felt the band relax and take form into a warmed-up entity ready to groove everyone’s socks off. I was fortunate enough to have gotten a photo pass for this first night, so I was in the pit about halfway through “The Divided Sky” which was about 10 minutes longer than any photographers are normally allowed to stand up close for (industry standard is 15 minutes or three songs). All of those songs become a complete blur in that my memories include the confetti cannons being shot off more so than I remember the funkiness of the “Wolfman’s Brother.” All I remember is having a blast jumping around speakers, trying to zoom and focus swiftly with my crappy lens, and watching the crowd just completely lose their shit. But then I found my buddies and got deep into this groove. This is a confident version and the beginning of the band loosening up, so that’s why it deserves a listen to get you ready for… READ MORE

A few weeks back, I caught one of my favorite Medeski, Martin & Wood shows I’ve seen to date. These guys seem to be a point in their career where they can do no wrong, and the show I saw definitely did not disappoint. So I thought I’d ask a friendly taper if we could use his source of the show for our next podcast and he happily complied with the ask, so hopefully this little podcast mix will help you groove your way through your Sunday. I threw the tracks together using my new “DJ” setup and it’s the first of many more mixes to come from me. Think of it as a dubbed out version of the memories I came away with from the show. Enjoy! Our illustrious Mr. Whitperson was feeling a bit under the weather today, but he had some time to put together a rocking podcast to pay homage to the 10 year anniversary of ’s Big Cypress NYE2000 celebration down in Florida, easily one of the most important concerts of the decade. Love it.

Phew. I’ve had one crazy summer! My sincere apologies for the radio silence. Moving to a big city will do that to a guy. For those that don’t know, I’m now officially a resident of Brooklyn and I couldn’t be more excited. Although there are ton of reasons to get excited about living in NYC, one of the great parts of my new spot is the sudden expansion of my concert calendar. Earlier today, I did a quick perusal of my options this Fall and was in shock at all the possibilities. Admittedly, free time, finances, and a need for sleep will certainly be getting in the way of those possibilities, but for the most part, I’m basically a kid in a fuckin’ candy store of rock’n'roll. Hooray NYC live music!

While I’m already looking ahead to the Fall concert calendar (and liking what I’m seeing), I can’t quite move on without a little reflection on my summer. Although things were nuttier than hell for me, I still managed to hit some good shows, including four concerts when all was said and done. From all that I witnessed in person — along with a heavy bout of listening sessions — I generally liked what I heard. I think the band hit some serious high notes along the way, including some killer improvisation.

As a result, I thought the best way to get back into the live music blogging world was with one my favorite LMB past-times: creating new Live Music Blog podcasts. So in honor of Phish’s triumphant return to the summer stage –- and to me being lucky enough to enjoy much of it in person — I’ve pieced together a DJ-style mix of what I consider to be some of the band’s best improvisational moments from their 2009 summer shows. As with previous mixes, I’ve cut right to the “meat” of the improv by splicing together only the jam sections and leaving out the vocal and main song segments.

There was some pretty top-notch jamming this summer, so this one clocks in at just over an hour. Although I think I’ve covered the key highlights, I am sure there are still plenty of other gems out there that I missed. So if I somehow neglected your favorite jam segment of the summer, I apologize. There was a lot of material to sift through! Either way, take a listen and make sure to drop us a comment with your impressions or share your personal favorite jams from the summer tour. Most of all, enjoy!

Back in December, I was lucky enough to catch a reunited Brothers Past play a killer NYE show outside of Philly. With their original drummer, Rick Lowenberg, back in the mix, BP reminded me why I became such a fan of their unique brand of live electronic dance music.

As I’ve been getting back into working out and running a bit more frequently, I realized I was low on new workout tunes to get me motivated. As a result, I decided to put together another version of our Hippie Workout Mix, this time with a focus on the badass beats of .

BP’s precise drum and bass beats and layered polyrhythms give this mix an extra kick in terms of intensity. In fact, on my test runs with this thing, it was often pretty difficult to keep up. I have no doubt it’ll get you moving.

For our 58th podcast, I’ve pieced together some highlights from two nights of KVHW at the Wetlands, which basically was the unofficial ‘jamband HQ’ in New York City until its closing last year. These two nights capture KVHW at its peak as a fresh, energetic, and exploratory improvisational rock band made up of amazing musicians.

Last week, I wrote a little round-up of some of the key bands that play some form of live, electronic dance music.
