Everyone’s favorite Hasidic Jewish reggae-rapper, Matisyahu, is touring heavy this Fall and will once again be hosting his “Festival of Light” Chanukah celebration this December. The eight-night run will include four shows each at Webster Hall and at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, with a different opening act featured each night, including: Glitch Mob, RANA, Dub Trio, John Brown’s Body, Brothers Past, Kid Koala and Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes).

You can grab a sample tune off of his latest album Light from this little widget:

One interesting thing about Matisyahu’s tour is that they’ve teamed up with Posse.com, an Australian start-up that seeks to involve fans as online promoters and just recently launched in the U.S. With Posse.com, fans can get involved in actually promoting bands’ shows and earn rewards for their viral marketing efforts. Although it has a bit of a “pay-for-play” feel to it, it’s certainly an interesting and innovative approach to the ever-evolving realm of online concert promotions. It’s also very “Live Music 2.0,” which we dig around these parts.

We didn’t have anyone on hand to round-up the festivities a few weekends back up in the Catskills of NY where the All Tomorrow’s Parties party went down, but I found a few choice updates from the fest that got some other folks blogging. The main takeaway was this Panda Bear download, even if it’s a low-quality FM rip, because it was his only show scheduled for 2009. He played a set complete with Animal Collective songs reworked, Panda Bear songs revisited, and a few new tracks that had yet to see the light of day.

I haven’t stopped listening to it since it made the journey to my hard drive, so I figured I’d offer it up here as a download track by track.

I really dig how “Chores” opens the set, and I was most happy to see that the old arrangement of “Guys Eyes” makes the set as well. The version that Animal Collective recorded for use on Merriweather Post Pavilion was good, but I always liked the original feel of the song when Panda Bear debuted this. “Ponytail” is arguably the most beautiful track off Panda Bear’s only release, Person Pitch, and it gets the proper treatment on this recording to keep the song as beautiful as it was on the album. Then the set moves onto a new song which has plenty of room to grow and get fleshed out, but I like where it stands today also. I’m sure this will be something that makes his next release, if/when we ever get him to do one. “Daily Routine” isn’t as true to form as you’d think, but “Bros” is just about spot-on to what you’d expect of that song. The “Boneless” jam is probably my highlight from the end of the set, which was captured rather shakily here:

It got me thinking that I haven’t been hearing too many bands work some level of Michael Jackson tribute into their sets these days. I guess that’s not crazy surprising to anyone, but I half-expected almost every show I saw after that event would feature some level of Thriller tease, a Beat It jam, or something similar. Am I just not seeing the right bands or is this too cliche to expect from any self-respecting touring musician?

I’m going to look into this one a bit. I know there are plenty of MJ tributes before his untimely passing but I’m curious as to whether or not people feel they can do it justice now that he’s gone. And if you want to catch the Metermaids tackling the MJ tributes, they’re playing at The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC tonight.

I’m home chilling and about to watch some evening news after running some errands — yes, I’m that cool — and I’ve got the new Atlas Sound/Panda Bear collaboration called “Walkabout” cranked about as loud as my upstairs neighbor would ever allow. I dig it.

And speaking of Panda Bear, I figured it was a good time to post an Animal Collective track I was actually sitting on for a while. I think I meant to get it posted when I posted the photos from their show at the Fox Theater in Oakland but I never got around to writing too much about that show. I’m not sure why, though. I probably could have easily gushed out 1,000 words about how much that band is changing the face of music as we know it, how nobody can compare right now, how they manage to get as many good reviews as they get bad reviews, etc. etc. I’ve been totally studying this band and their sound for a few years now, and this track still totally blew me away the first time I heard it.

Animal Collective – “Why Would I Want Sky” (BBC Session) [mp3]

The song was featured pretty prominently on their last tour through the states; I’m pretty sure it made the setlist every night, including the NPR Webcast they did. And it was pretty exciting to see that the band is actually playing into all the media coverage calling them the next “Grateful Dead” by deciding to license the use of a song by the Grateful Dead, “Unbroken Chain.” I’m not sure I really even heard it when I first heard the track, nor do I really find the sample right now. Maybe I’m just paying too attentively to the front and center sounds.

At any rate, what do you guys think of this track?

Phish put up another update to their “Save the Date” Halloween Festival map in the style of a pinball machine, with the pinball knocking out five more states in the quest to the truth on where this festival is going to take place. There was some discussion around how the California animation was spent hovering over the United States just waiting to come down again, but I’m not sure that was ever true and really called out as bullshit as quickly as it needed to be. The flash animation had actually stopped, and now that “hovering” California is completely gone from the map. Knowing just a little about how Flash works, I’m not surprised by this at all.

So where’s this festival going to be? Some are saying it’s still Indio, CA, some are calling Dateland, AZ the would-be spot, and others are now calling for Big Cypress and Texas as other would-be spots, all of which are not yet eliminated from the map (except for California). What do you guys think?

Just for fun, I thought I’d upload some tunes in the pinball spirit. Here’s something to listen to while you drop a comment on what you think about this whole process.

I feel that fans are like, pissed about this now or something. I tend to think this is “classic” Phish and I’m loving every second of it. Which camp are you in?

I thought I’d drop a quick post to commemorate the holiday while Justin’s off gallivanting at the High Sierra Music Festival. I got a brief text from him saying he’s not getting great mobile service and trying to conserve cell juice, so I think we’ll just wait until the weekend’s out to get his thoughts on HSMF.

Meanwhile, I am catching a few solid sets from the Rothbury Festival courtesy of iclips.net’s Rothbury webcast, which marks a solid start to their summer festival series, dubbed “The Couch Tour.”

Of course, we couldn’t let the 4th of July go by without giving a nod to Phish’s hot and sweaty show at the Lakewood Amphitheater 10 years ago today. What better way to commemorate the 4th of July than with a super slow and psychedelic version of “Ghost” that morphs perfectly into a triumphant “Slave to the Traffic Light.” Check it out:

Phish – “Ghost” (live, 7/4/99) [mp3]
Phish – “Slave to the Traffic Light” (live, 7-4-99) [mp3]

By the looks of the setlist and from what I’ve heard, this show featured some serious jamming and a ton of silly banter and antics in fine Phish fashion.

But as much as I love this “Ghost > Slave” sequence, I still think my favorite Independence Day Phish show took place the following year in Camden. That show already got its own post last year, so you can check out here: Phish Friday | The 4th of Jiboo.

However you celebrate the 4th of July holiday, be safe, have fun, and be sure not to mix too much booze with all those fireworks!

Mas Bisco? Si, por favor!

We posted an update on a bunch of Disco Biscuits news the other day, but the band has since announced a number of additional summer dates in the lead-up to Camp Bisco. The tour, aptly titled “The Road to Camp Bisco Tour,” includes dates in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and a two-night run at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ for all you Bisco gambling fiends. Future Rock will be joining them for a few of the dates with other opening artists to be announced.

The band also just released a new podcast with some choice cuts from their last few tours. Although we still prefer our very own Disco Biscuits podcasts the best, this new mix from the band contains some serious grooves, including an especially awesome middle section that morphs from “Run Like Hell” into a happy “island” jam right around the 49:00 min mark. It had me bouncin’ in my chair at work.
