In case you missed it, Phish dropped a little nugget (only 35 minutes worth) of a preview from the Hampton/Winston-Salem ’97 release that’s due out in December. The 7-CD box set is bound to get tons of airtime on this here blog as the band’s team continues to feed us bloggers with little treats to share with the rest of the fans. They put out a ton of previews when the Live in Utica and Coral Sky DVDs were put out.
And for the first teaser from the box set, the band put out the insane “Mike’s Groove” opener from the second night of Hampton from the run…
MP3: Phish – “Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove” (11/22/97 Hampton, VA)
That moment they start to hit on around 13:00 minutes, arguably the early discoveries of sonic force that would become moments like “What’s the Use?” — man, that is the good stuff. This is a must-download.
Happy Friday, dudes.

Pretty Lights @ Red Rocks, Colorado 8/13/11
Pretty Lights just released the single for “I Know The Truth,” the tune featured prominently in his Bonnaroo recap video that’s been linked around a few times here and there on this site and LMB NOLA. I guess Wes and I dug this tune having linked it up, and obviously Derek Vincent Smith had other reasons why he wanted to release this tune:
“With the track ‘I Know The Truth’ I wanted to try to fuse the emotion of dark 60′s soul music with the energy of raw bass heavy dubstep,” says Derek Vincent Smith. “All the instruments were recorded to tape and then pressed to vinyl and then sampled for the sole purpose of attaining a warm organic timbre, and all the bass and synth sounds were reprocessed through analog synth modules to get a dirtier and at the same time warmer tone. It’s my first attempt at producing in a new style I like to call analog electronica. It’s modern electronic music production created with an approach based on techniques from 40-50 years ago.”
I’m definitely psyched to have a crispy version of the track for my iPhone now. Head over to prettylightsmusic.com to download the track. I’ll be catching PL (DVS) down in Austin this week as part of the Austin City Limits Music Festival festivities. Then he’s hitting New Orleans and moving around the rest of the country for a bit, hopefully recording music as he rolls along…

moe. w/ Trey Anastasio - 2005 Tsunami Benefit @ Roseland Ballroom - Photo by Rex Foundation
Was looking for something to spin on Turntable.fm just now and came across this forgotten gem of a show from ’05 when moe. played host to a Tsunami Benefit at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom. Had forgotten how ridiculous this set list/guest list is/was/forever will be. Thankfully it’s housed on Archive.org for people to enjoy in perpetuity. When will a “Peaches en Regalia” with moe., Trey Anastasio and John Medeski ever happen again? Magical, never-to-be-repeated stuff went down that evening and the show raised $75,000 (which Dave Matthews matched) for recovery efforts in the wake of the horrific 2004 Indonesian earthquake. It’s always very impressive what bands can do when the siren rings and help is needed.
Hopefully such an effort will not be necessary in the coming weeks and Hurricane Irene will blow over with minimal damage, but if help is needed, the jam scene has always been great about banding together for a good cause to help those in need. With moe.down XII set for next weekend in Mohawk, NY perhaps the band can use the gathering as an opportunity to raise a little dough if needed. Fingers crossed for those on the Northeast coast. Check out the set list/guest list and a trio of videos after the jump. READ MORE

Happy Friday, ya’ll.
Easily my favorite set of the Jazz Fest weekend and at last, it’s finally available for our enjoyment. The freeform, improvisational grooves of the first half of the show have been given some interesting track names by guitarist and show all-star Brian Stoltz. Click the links below to check out this pretty solid audience recording of some late night Jazz Fest magic.

Literally.
The band from Vermont’s first leg continued over the weekend and instead of losing any momentum at all, they gained some steam. Phish added a song to their rotation on Saturday. Not just any song…but a damn good one. Hell, the competition isn’t very tough these days, but still! With the 3.0 incarnation of Phish we’ve been accustomed to new material but nothing with the game changing status of this new Tom Marshall/Trey Anastasio track. Only a few days removed from the second set in Blossom, word is slowly filtering and the FLAC’s are slowly making their way into the ears of the Phish community. READ MORE
