Last night, The Joy Theater opened its doors to the general public for the first time since 2003 with a performance by Irma Thomas and Lance Ellis to help the the 1947 Canal Street theater spring back into action. Marc Pagani was there to capture photos of what will surely be the first of many magical nights on Canal Street.
Phish is about to begin night two down at MSG but we’ve got our shots from night one courtesy of our good buddy Nick Irving. You’ve seen his work here plenty of times and he’s given us a huge set from last night; I love how this gives that good mix of what you’d hope to see at a show…. the band up front, the light show, and lit-up arena rock moments. Makes me feel like I was there…
Thanks to Nick Irving for bringing his gear down to MSG to shoot the Phish show for us last night. Stay tuned to the site and our friends at @CoventryMusic, @PeteLikesPhish and @YEMblog for updates from the show. READ MORE

Phish played their first of four nights at Madison Square Garden last night as part of their New Year’s Eve run, and I was there rocking some of set one on Couch Tour while my crew of buddies was raging hard at the arena.
Here’s the setlist from Phish.net:
Set I: Free, Glide > Possum, Cities, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Stash, Contact > Sample in a Jar, Kill Devil Falls > Bathtub Gin
Set II: Birds of a Feather, Carini -> Tweezer[1] > My Friend, My Friend[2] -> Rock and Roll[3] -> NICU, Bouncing Around the Room, Harry Hood > Bug
Encore: Tube > Rocky Top > Tweezer Reprise
[1] Streets of Cairo tease.
[2] No “Myfe” ending.
[3] Birds of a Feather jam.
We’ll have more coverage, videos, and photos in the next few days and as always stay up on the feed at @YEMblog for the latest media hitting the web after these shows. I’m always psyched at how fast the media gets uploaded after every show.
For any Bay Area fans, don’t miss out on the viewing party at the Independent tonight. Brick & Mortar is showing it, too.
Thursday night will mark a new era on Canal Street when The Joy Theater reopens on December 29th, led by a string of shows and starting with Irma Thomas and Lance Ellis. The following night Cyril Neville’s Tribe 13 and Soul Rebels Brass Band will play and Kermit Ruffins and the BBQ Swingers will perform on New Years Eve. For more info on upcoming shows at the Joy in 2012, visit and like the theater’s facebook page by going here. On the slate for January includes shows with Cowboy Mouth, Little River Band and Percy Sledge to help kick things into gear in the new year. Excited to finally see the inside of the newly refurbished digs and we’ll have photo coverage of opening night shortly after the New Year.
The connection between STS9 and 2012 over the years (the Great Cycle Spectacles have already been announced for next year) is well documented, and to ring in the big New Year, the jazzy electroquest band will be returning to their longtime staple venue for S9′s first five-night run in the same building since a Boulder run in 2007 with a Tuesday-Saturday run at the Tabernacle in ATL READ MORE
