One of the best parts of both C3 juggernaut festivals (Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits) is the fact that they both take place in beautiful city parks within striking distance of the Chicago and Austin downtown areas. This is great both (a) because it makes for easy access to all the great things the respective cities have to offer outside Grant and Zilker parks and (b) the nighttime skyline views behind the main stages are absolutely killer while watching a set from a band like Arcade Fire or Jane’s Addiction (who closed it down at Lolla ’09 w/ helicopters flying above) play to a crowd of 50,000+. On Sunday night, we got an interesting/unique overhead perspective of Zilker and the masses below.

Their opening set would start promptly at 8pm and folks were still migrating in — figuring out this show wouldn’t be sold out — Come to the front! The band started off with the first track on the album due out September 27th, with Beggar in the Morning. It’s slow dissonant instrumental build was the perfect way to start the show and the line “I think I’ve come a long long way — to sit before you here today” felt just right.

After a pretty chillaxed Broken Social Scene set to start my day three at ACL Fest, I met up with my crew and caught a thrilling end to the Bomba Estero set. We all agreed that set was amazing and definitely got that world-music-dance vibe down, which got me a bit more pumped up to head over to see the Death From Above 1979 set. I really loved shooting these guys; it made for a fun set of animated gifs (which are coming soon).

Paper Diamond, the new Pretty Lights label darling and solo project by Alex B., just kicked off a tour last night in Burlington, VT. I should have gotten these posted earlier to help promo the show (if any Burlington heads actually read this here rag), but I’m sure plenty of people made it out anyway given the name cache that his new music has been rolling with.

Speaking of rolling, the tour rolls into Boston tonight and makes it way around the country, including a stop in Hawaii at Hallowbaloo Festival for Halloween and and stops in Colorado and New Orleans in November.
